really we should compare notes, because ive found in my travels that competition has always raised the quota for skill and achievement, those who give up and are smothered by the thought of competition are the ones who are insecure about their own abilities

ok look at it this way, if you were just fuckin around in dm, how many frags would you get? maybe 11 or so not really trying right? in tourney if you were just fuckin around how many frags would you get? close to none, cause teamplay is more serious, you can still get alot of kills jus playin around in dm, hence what i meant you can do alot better in dm not really trying too hard, especially with the rampant newbs running around

I will say this:

I have been dabbling in 1v1 since 1997 or something beginning on Mplayer.  Sucked at it then, suck at it now, but I still dabble.
Only thing is in 97 dial up was competitive, it ain't now

If you go bopping into a 1v1 now thinking your going to hop around, grab a weapon and look for your opponent, then you will get a rail shot or a grenade to the head in about 2 seconds.  Get serious.  I can't really use the chain, but it is a great 1v1 weapon.  Some of the best advice I ever got was Banes telling me last night to "use grenades against him" it allowed me to get one measley frag (actually I got two, but I killed myself later   ) 

The seriously good 1v1 players now, as then, will wax your ass so fast you won't have time to feel your head spin.

I know this so I will not be disheartened when I'm beaten 30 to -2

be on your guard, pick up everything you run by even if you don't plan on using it.  deprive your opponent of everything.

If you are on the edge, listen for the sounds and camp like a bitch.  leave the rail alone becasue water makes too much noise. go for the super shotgun and grenades.

What I am trying to say (from my experience) is that on the rare night (being on dial up too) in DM sometimes I cannot miss.  I know where you are going to land and thats where I am placing my rocket.  My rail is going through you.  Sometimes I cannot miss!  Sometimes I win.  Mainly because I have been playing Q2 and Q3 for 8 years and the DM FFA map I'm on is my favorite and I am in the mood and there is plenty of cannon fodder available. It does happen occasionally that I do win the map

Still, if all my experience stated above was in 1v1, I feel like I would be a lot better player than I am currently.  Dailup, cable, dsl or whatever.

1v1, the sweaty palms, win or lose (don't ever quit in the middle of a match) is an experience that is very exciting.  And it makes you better as a player.

meh, if you are not looking for that experience then DM is still fun
