Debate away! ..
I cant say much, because i've only ever had 3dfx or nvidia, but im happy with this nvidia right now, I know nvidia perform better in q2 and I get 1800 fps in 1024 res in time refresh with this card, (overclocked 6600GT), just had a couple of driver problems at the start, now it's running good!

I've tried both ATI cards and Nvidia cards, and until recently, I've
been very dissapointed with ATI.
ATI's newest generation of cards and drivers seem to be cleaning up some of the most
troubling bugs, but I have yet to notice any bugs at all with an Nvidia card and a win32 machine.
For business applications like CAD, I'd go with an Nvidia.
For many games, I'd say they are roughly equal in their capabilites.
Unfortunately, for Q2 and several other games based on the Q2 engine,
older ATI cards come up way short,
and their newer drivers are totally fuxxored.
Although, I'd still take a brand-spankin-new ATI card over my old geforce mx440.

Nvidia all the way, only down thing about them is they release too many cards,so your upto date card will be replaced by something tweaked.Never owned an ATI but one day I might give them a go.But if your gonna just play games like quake 2 then there is no point in upgrading.

Don't limit yourself to brands, know what you want:
- Features
- Speed

- Reliability
Then shop on price.

I had an ATI RADEON 9800 pro and the fan malfunctioned (ended up melting) within a year and overheated the card.
Now I go with nVidia, they seem to have made quite a bit of improvements with their drivers. They always used to have pretty crappy s-Video out support.

nVidia, however mine right now is pissing me off.
When working within Windows XP x64 all items (Windows, Cursor, Icons, etc...) have a repeating shadow. This is not your normal Windows visual effects shadow (Even with shadows turned off, it still appears). It appears to be a defect with my card which I find rather annoying. Of course other people can barely see it but to me the normal user of the computer, it bugs right out at me!
I have used most recent and old drivers for my card, no fix. I have changed VGA/DVI adaptors, no fix. I am unsure how to fix this issue.
Anyhow that has been my only complaint about nVidia cards so far.

Well, Quake 2 isn't really a good platform for judging current generation cards.
Judging from benchmarks nVidia really outperforms ATI in the low to medium priced cards. I haven't looked at the high end cards.
I never tried ATI cards though. Only nVidia and Kyro. The Kyro cards blew big time though. The ATI drivers look bulky as hell.

AMD recently bought out ATI for around 5 billion dollars.

As far as hardware malfunctions, you guys gotta remember that nvidia doesn't make the heatsink/fans that go on the video cards, nor do they make the capacitors that help power the video cards. The only thing that nvidia manufacturers is the GPU on the card...everything else is provided from other manufacturers and is mounted on the PCB by the parent company of which your video card is made. The PCB could come from anywhere, the RAM chips on it probably came from Taiwan or China or even Korea (Hyundai, Hynix, Samsung, Hitachi, etc.), and the capacitors from God-knows-where.
