Hey I've been away for quite some time and really missed the action. I almost feel like a newbie. If I have any problems getting reconnected I hope somebody will help me out.

Highly recommended.  tastyspleen.net's servers run R1Q2 - also R1Q2 was recently adopted as the official client for this year's coming QuakeCon.

Saw a guy on the server the other day with that new R1Q2..but the bot scans kept disconnecting him...wonder what thats about?

There are a number of benefits to running R1Q2 as a client.
 
Increased security: There exist security exploits because of bugs in the original Quake2 code that would allow a malicious server operator to execute arbitrary code on your client.  R1Q2 fixes a boatload of security problems.

Uses less net bandwidth, faster map downloads: If an R1Q2 client is talking to an R1Q2 server, a number of network optimizations turn on, including compression of packet data.

Note, R1Q2 is NOT an anti-cheat client.  It's more like a pure 3.21 client with 1,000 bug fixes and optimizations, but otherwise true to the original.

R1Q2 is just a Quake2 client with a plethora of optimizations and security fixes.  It's not an anti-cheat client.  So some weasel could run a ratbot or wallhack or whatever with R1Q2 just like they can with the standard id client.
