My daughter is 20 and finished her second year of college, yet I still find myself in "Dad-mode" from time to time. Being a teenager is hard; they need to push the edges of the box and start the move toward independence. But it's also hard to be the parent of a teeenager, because you realize how much they don't know and try to protect them from hurting themselves -- all while allowing them more and more freedom to make decisions and deal with the consequences. You also have to ride them occasionally to help them form good habits,which they see as nagging because they lack the patience to see that building good habits requires a lot of hard work. I'd agree some people don't make good parents, but the large majority try their best and wind up doing a pretty good job.

Hang in there, Alice! Sounds to me like your parents really do love you even if things are contentious from time to time. At the risk of sounding trite, you have a roof over your head, are fed and clothed, and have many things provided for you. Right now it's free (and I'm not attaching a guilt trip to that -- all of those things are a parent's responsibility -- I'm just pointing out that's a real benefit not to ignore), but it won't be in a few years, take the opportunity to start making some plans for your future. There are a lot think about and that time will come faster than you think. Along the way I'll bet you and your parents will both survive and you will continue to love each other.

I did go home a few months later and stayed there while going to school ( grd. 11 ) but soon it all started again and I finally moved out for the last time at age 16, right befor my 17th.

So I was broke, depressed, starving, on drugs, shitty job, drunk all the time. Man all I can say is at the time it all seemed like the right decition.

But now I feel huge remorse for how I treated my parents. when all they ever did was love me....
I try to make it up to them, cause its been just about 8 yrs since then. But I cant make up for the time ( 3 yrs ) that I barely talked to them.

No matter what your fighting about with them, remember, they love you more than anything.

and nothing is worse than making your father and mother cry because your being selfish and a bitchy little teenager <--- me not you,

I just cant get that image of my dad out of my head.... the only time I ever saw him cry was when his mother died, and when I told him I hated him.

take my advice.... dont do things as a teen that will make you hate yourself later in life....... good luck sweetheart.

Donnie Darko is a great film. If you get the special edition be sure to check out the Number One Fan documentary; it's quite amusing.

I fought through a depression tooth and nail and for me it all comes down to personal responsibility. You always have a choice. What do YOU want out of life? Obviously listen to your parents but don't take their word as solid gold - the only thing you should ever be sure of regarding your parents is that they love you. They are wiser than you but they are JUST as confused as you are about their own lives - I don't care who they are. We are all in this together on this weird rock circling around the sun - and we all are confused as hell about the purpose of it all. But perhaps, with a little bit of motivation on your part, you can go out and at least make things that much better for yourself and for upcoming generations, eh? What is the old dilemma - so much freedom to do what you want... but that, it seems, is the ultimate curse as well. It all depends on how you look at it.

Go out and get what you want. There is ALWAYS an option - you just have to look for it. Take criticism as simply advice to grow by. Use it as a step to lift yourself up higher.

It is an unfortunate curse of the young that the ones with the most to say are often the ones most afraid to come out and say it, and it seems many only learn later in life the extent of their abilities. Shoot for the moon, dammit!
