When you first loaded up your brand new Quake2 CD in the caddy, fired up your Voodoo Banshee card and began slaying Strogg -- you were playing a game.

When you first typed "name _____" in the console, put some funny clan letters in front, began playing 2v2s/4v4s in (semi-)organized leagues with stats, rules-enforcing mods(gx,tourney,battleground) and "team" finals, you entered into the world of sport, technically amateur sport.

Reaper, here's a good example: Off the top of my head, take Dahang. When b:d competes with say, Darkside, in a best of three, double-elim tournament, 'Hang is definitely engaged in sport. To be precise, pro sports, since q4(still?)attracts sponsors and money. When FoJ scrims Devine in a best of three, for example, he's engaged in amateur sports. When he's ffa'ing or just doing random pick-ups, he's playing q2 recreationally, technically a pastime.

Another example: If Cal Ripken picked up a bat and started hitting balls out to a gloved friend, then they switch, he's enjoying baseball as a pastime NOT as a sport. Notice he's doing almost all the actions he did when he played for the Orioles: hitting, catching, running. If Cal joins a community league, then he enters in amateur sports.

The imposition of rules, time structuring and organized competition over a continuous "season" or specified duration really pushes pastime or recreation into the totally different world of sports. "Cybersports" is a completely accurate term, not invented by marketers or sponsors, and wholly defined by the competitors and personalities who play them. Nonsensical to dismiss Fat's endeavours as some wildly obsessive fascination with recreational gaming. He's a sports star, period.
