Author Topic: Widescreen Or Regular LCD Monitor? (Read 6035 times)

Well, my 21in Sony Trinitron finally is crapping out on me. I am looking at replacing it with a LCD. I have been looking around and I am confused on whether or not to buy a Widescreen or Regular format LCD monitor. I have a 7800 GTX, so I can support higher resolutions, but do games that do not support the funky widescreen resolutions look bad on widescreen monitors? I realize some of the new games have widescreen resolutions built in but I still play a lot of older games. If widescreen is going to be the standard in the coming years, I guess I am better off with one of those. Anyone have a widescreen? Would you mind sharing your experiences? Thanks...

dont you have to use 60hz otherwise you'll get tearing/ghosting? sounds bad to me

agreed, i purchased one with high hopes and ended up returning it.

my monitor is so old, its turning a funny yellow color.

I've never ran my lcd in anything but 60Hz since I use the DVI connection, but I don't see why you would get tearing or ghosting with something higher.

It should be fine as long as the response time is about 16ms or lower. I've never had any problems with mine with games.

Yeah, I don't see much of a performance difference with my LCD.

Most newer games support widescreen resolutions. Actually I think some Quake II clients support widescreen too.
The ones that don't will get scaled... which degrades quality. I think you can tell your drivers not to scale your screen, but I'm not sure how that would look like though.

I would go for the widescreen.

my LCD Runs fine at 75hz, the one in my sig. picture has 0 blur and is very bright and clear.

I have read quite a bit about different monitors, but the consensus seems to be that old CRT monitors are the way to go.

i want a monitor that gets 120hz at 1024res.. right now im using 100hz @ 800x600

Edit: I changed my mind. I don't like playing in 800 res, so I switched back to gl_mode 3 (640 res). Apparently by using reforce you can set the refresh rate for multiple resolutions. So I can set 640 at 85 (q2) and also 800 at 85 (windows) and it will stick to those.

why are you using 85hz if you can get 120hz on 800 res? that means you can get at least 120hz on 640 res also

Ill bet it tops out at 85, mine does.. 19 in vx900.
I was happy to get it... cant do the 120 fps, but it is nicer than 60

USUALLY the dialup likes to do 70, but if it stays smooth I bump it to 90

dunno if that extra 5 does anything.......
