Concerning TDM and learning
« on: May 06, 2006, 08:05:01 AM »
Hey guys, just wanted to let you know that I have managed (finally!) to get a number of AW members interested in TDM.  We practice fairly regularly (still struggling with communication and such, but ya know) and would like to scrim with any clans out there that feel like giving some true-blue TDM n00bs a beating.  We are awful at it but we are committed to learning this extremely difficult mod.

It would really be a help to have some experienced players give us some tips on teamwork and TDM in general, because honestly we are kind of flying blind.  It

Yer on yer own at times like that, tdm role will be handed to def if a time like that is decided, with exams happening almost round the corner, the only playing time after 10 GMT (England time) will be at weekends.

Well, I'm not a TDM expert, but I've seen my fair share of TDM demos and player a lot of pickups on q2dm1 so I should know a little bit.

As for teamwork, teamwork is something that can always be improved.

Weapon-binds:
First off, you all need weapondropping binds! Dropping weapons is a vital part of q2 TDM, since weapons respawn in 30 seconds, which mean if you want to control a map you need to give teammates who dies a weapon after they respawn in order to maintain control.

Strategy:
TDM isn't FFA, well, it shouldn't be. For instance, take a look on the q2dm maps that are mostly played in 4v4 tdm. What you want is to have control of the vital areas of a map in order to control strong weapons/powerups using them to kill lesser armed opponents. So, the most common way is to give certain tasks to each member of the team: one guy hold this area, one guy hold this area, these two guys run quad and so on. Playing position is not as easy as it sounds, a lot of choices need to be made through the game, when to give up position or when to help out teammates regaining other positions or how to retake a lost position. It's rare that one team holds every key position of the map. Also teamwork between positions, how to distribute weapons around the team, for instance on q2dm1 the guy holding the rail-area must give railguns to teammates so they can use them in the arena picking easy frags there.

Some positions on q2dm maps (the most common):
q2dm1: megaroom, water/rail, lift
q2dm2: quadrunner, RA/rail-lift, under-ra, RL/quad-lift
q2dm3: rail, rl, ssg/quad, quadrunner
q2dm5: rail/quad, quadrunner, RA, (rl)
q2dm6: cg/quad, quadrunner, rail, bfg
q2dm7: RA, upper RL/GL, hyper/ssg
q2dm8: rail, powerup-runner, hyper/lower area

RA: red armor
RL: rocketlauncher
SSG: supershotgun
GL: grenade launcher

Binds/ventrilo:
All teams communicate one way or the other. That can be a good working set of teambinds that tells teammates if positions are held/lost, enemy location and so on, or it can just as well be real time voice chat using ventrilo or similar programs. A lot of teams are using vent these days. As for teambinds, you need to make sure it's used correctly, but what is correct is not a 100% set rule, some people spams it a lot, others are using it only when it's really needed. So, try to work out how much info you need at the time.

Teaming up:
Teamplay is a lot about teaming up 2 or 3 at the time taking down opponents. Learn to work in pairs or even 3 at the time. Try to come onto an enemy at an angle between you, so you aren't blocking eachothers view, else you end up being an easy target for enemy rail or the front guy will get friendly rockets in his ass. Two players with machinegun can take out a railer in a short period of time, so stick together if you aren't stacked on armor/weapons and can take down enemies alone.

Hmm, that's just some basic advices. The best advice is to watch demos from lets say top finnish/swedish/polish clans (sYnth/HBQ/2.0 etc), and see how they play. And then play a lot, it will help in the end I think ;D

Thanks for the tips, Dael!

My main problem is keeping up with everything.

"Okay NME is there, I just got chain, the mega is gonna respawn in 10 seconds, the armor is about to respawn, the NME is shooting rockets, run away, oh shit forgot the mega, oh SHIT MEGA IS TAKEN *head explodes*"

So much fun though!  TDM, although the hardest mod I have played in Q2, is also the most fun.  Interesting...  :headbang:

alias +bob "bind mwheeldown cg1;bind mwheelup rl1;bind mouse3 rg1;bind pgdn gl1;bind ctrl sg1;bind del hb1; "
alias -bob "bind mwheeldown cg2;bind mwheelup rl2;bind mouse3 rg2;bind pgdn gl2;bind ctrl sg2;bind del hb2 "
bind shift +bob
bind mwheelup rl2
bind mouse3 rg2
bind mwheeldown cg2
bind pgdn gl2
bind ctrl sg2
bind del hb2
bind end

so just add drop shotgun; drop shells and drop machinegun to the lines that drop respectively? so to this id add drop machinegun; at the start right?

alias cg1 "drop chaingun;drop bullets;wait;drop bullets;say_team [DROP - CHAINGUN @ $loc_here$]"

so it reads

alias cg1 "drop machine gun;drop chaingun;drop bullets;wait;drop bullets;say_team [DROP - CG/MG @ $loc_here$]"
