The "he started it" defense seems to miss the point. If you know people are trying to start shit with you, and your response is to get into an emotional argument with them, you have already lost.

well... the point was, whether or not they "win" depends entirely on how you respond.

If you respond with an emotional argument, it pretty much = guaranteed loss for you. The meta-question of whether the initiators may have in fact ended up looking like some form of pond scum for daring to be so uncouth as to attempt to start shit with someone in the first place, is pretty much sidelined if you blow it by taking the bait and getting into a heated argument with them.

There are a multitude of possibilities... why take the one method guaranteed to fail.
