New PC video issues

I bought a new PC and im having a shit of a time getting the resolution right in q2. When i load q2 the q2 menu is so big i cant see squat. I tried using vid_modelist 1920x1080 (which is what i have set my desktop to) and that has somewhat worked but it looks stretched.

Im running an rtx 3050, native res is 3840x2160 but q2pro does not go that high

Have you tried these settings in your config? i messed around with these settings until i got something i liked.

set r_customwidth "?"
set r_customheight "?"

Finding the right number for vid_xpos (horizontal) to get your game screen centred is the hardest part.


edit: These are original settings, i don't know if they work as Q2Pro settings.

To actually change to your desired resolution in q2pro, you only need to change the vid_fullscreen value.

In q2pro the vid_modelist is just a list of available presets, it's not the command you use to change or set your screen resolution.

(Better not put vid_modelist 1920x1080 in your config or otherwise you wont be able to use any other value than 1920x1080.
So first remove the vid_modelist 1920x1080 line from your config.)


In r1q2 you only have vid_fullscreen 0 and 1 (off and on)
But different to r1q2, in q2pro the vid_fullscreen value acts as index into the list of video modes specified by ‘vid_modelist’


If I do a vid_modelist I get this:

1st on the list is desktop -> index 1 -> vid_fullscreen 1 (runs desktop resolution)
2nd on the list is 1920x1080@75 -> index 2 -> vid_fullscreen 2 (runs 1920x1080@75)
3rd on the list is 1920x1080@60 -> index 3 -> vid_fullscreen 3 (runs 1920x1080@60)
14th on the list is 1600x900@60 -> index 14 -> vid_fullscreen 14 (runs 1600x900@60)
...and so on.

In summary, vid_fullscreen 1 should run q2pro in desktop mode which in your case would be 3840x2160

If it's not taking you could also try to edit your vid_modelist to only have a couple of higher resolutions in it

/set vid_modelist "1920x1080@60 3840x2160@60"
/set vid_fullscreen 2

(be careful with the Hz values, leave 'em out if you're not sure)

I look at Windows settings app to determine what the desktop resoution is. Then I synchronize the q2pro settings to match them.
I've been using this in my autoexec.cfg for years (even before q2pro) and it makes alt-tab'ing out of the game very seamless and the game is centered and focussed correctly. Setting vid_fullscreen is optional, of course.

This works fine in r1q2, but unfortunately these three:

vid_forcewidth
vid_forceheight
vid_optimalrefresh

are 'unknown commands' in q2pro.

After setting pc to native res then mucking around with it vid_fullscreen then vidmodelist 800x600@60 was perfect got rid of the stretched look

There's no way that looks decent. There's gotta be some way of getting closer to 1080p. 1024x768 doesn't work? Post some screens.

WTF kinda monitor are you using to where you have 3840x2160 res, but 800x600 widescreens out across all of it, and then the resulting screenshot is an old style square monitor size. Is the game actually taking the 800 width and stretching it all the way across making it look squashed or do you get black bars on the sides? When I take screenshots, they come out a similar ratio... but I've got a game res that IS that resolution and I have black bars on the sides.

Also curious how well a monitor like that handles fast paced games like q2. When I bought, I made sure to get an old school style TN panel LCD monitor, Benq Zowie 27 inch, which I've got set at about 165hz. The new gen consoles are supposed to put out 120.

I was using some Dell IPS panel monitor for a while, and the colors on it were much more accurate and realistic than this thing - it kinda blooms the reds a bit in a funky way. It was also bad about "ghosting" even though I think the refresh rate was at 60.

Since I started playing at TS back in 07, I had used a little old Benq TN panel, 1024x768 res. I played on 30hz for about a decade before I finally discovered... "oh shit, this thing is running at 30 but can go to 70." And that's the whole reason why that monitor lasted that long too. About 6 months after I kicked it up to 70, it finally burnt out. But no matter how low I went with refresh, no ghosting on it.

Nothing wrong with my hearing, With my new gaming motherboard with realtek sound using sony headset. I'm not as stupid about this game as you think I am. What you don't realize is playing on a 200+ ping has made me develop a very unique style of play through the years. I rely heavily on sound and movement. I may not be the best jumper around but I can make a lot of people miss by analyzing their movement in a quick way and predicting what they will do next. As for the sound I know a lot about sound ques.

You are a very suspicious player and for a very good reason. I have watched you play numerous time and you appear to respond and find people with no sound ques whatsoever, it wouldnt look so bad on a small spammy map, but on a large ass map with 2 players and you find them 100% of the time, yeah it looks sus as hell
