No hardware OpenGL acceleration detected

I've upgraded a Dell Latitude E4300 to W10. The processor does not support hardware acceleration and therefore fails on launch with the Q2PRO Fatal Error.
Is there a solution to this? I've read that there is a software setting, ie set vid_ref soft, but putting this in the q2config file has not resolved the issue.
Any solutions out there?
I was going to use this laptop as a dedicated Quake machine.....

Q2pro uses its own renderer, built into the exec and it's Opengl only. Try Yamagi, it will have an excellent software mode.

That laptop should support Opengl, but the version it supports is probably older than the latest  Q2pro Opengl version. Try an older Q2pro release:
