Anyone elso notice the remaster runs not so great online? This is because they are all listen servers and not dedicated?

I'm pretty sure I never actually purchased Quake 2 (I've been playing, off and on, since 1999). I decided to purchase Q2 on Steam to right that wrong a bit and to try out the remaster. I like that the railgun (and all hitscan weapons, I presume?) has updated code where you don't need to lead the shot based on ping. It's weird getting used to that though after you've been playing by leading a bit for so long. It was running really herky jerky for me though - not like really low fps, but just didn't look smooth. I presume it's some setting that I don't know how to fiddle with yet. I'm glad it's getting some attention again.

First thing I want to say is welcome back Punk.  Good to see you again.  I happen to really like the Q2 remaster.  I believe the net code is actually much better.  For me it is still playable up to 200 ping.  At 130 ping in old Q2, it was pretty unplayable for me.  I never knew you had to lead your shot for the rail in the old Q2.  I guess that is why I can't rail anyone.  I did notice railing seemed easier in the remaster though.  I can't wait until they have dedicated servers.  The P2P stuff leads to so many disconnects.  Microsoft Playfab has the connection issues according to "Paril".

Admittedly I didn't play much Lithium back in the day, so I don't know if there's something that "feels" off aside from the runes spawning which I had to add an additional check. I'm also not active in Discord, so I've no idea if someone was already working on this. But this was more of a personal project to see I could get something to work rather than having the philanthropic goal of trying to convert something for the community...

I like the remaster. I think it does the original justice without changing too much. You can't ramp jump or do the funny double jump to lights + mega on dm1 easily but you can't have it all.

It's got a lot of my friends playing Quake 2 now which is very funny. I'm seeing Quake 2 shitposts and memes on Twitter now which is absolutely hilarious to think about.

But they didn't include Zaero so it's an automatic 0/10 for me, would not recommend.

It has the core gameplay of RA2 - spawn with all weapons, round-based TDM, etc. Not much is customizable; you can set starting health/armor and round limits but you're stuck with default ammo counts, self-damage is always armor-only, etc. No support for the RA2 map format (no multi-arena, no idea if the original ra2mapx maps will load in remaster but if they do, I'm guessing the spawns will be all over the place).

Would anyone here be interested in working on a new Quake 2 game based on DM/RA2 code? it'd be for old Quake 2 and/or new Quake 2, i've had the idea for this new Quake 2 game for a while but i'm just not a coder, perhaps you might like to try your hand at coding it?
