mymap changes on dm server

Greetings,

We have expanded the rotation to include 3 mymap choices per rotation instead of just 2. While the dm server is mostly for official maps, the hope is to add more variety to your gaming session on dm by adding another mymap slot as well as another random mymap picked by the server each rotation.

Additionally we have added the maps ht1 and q2tdm1 as a mymap choice.
We don't want to overload the server with mymap choices and make the mutant or ffa servers redundant, but if anyone has suggestions on a mymap to add, feel free to bring it up in this thread!

Some of the quake3 maps that I've seen ported to quake2 might make for some nice additions. Technically they are classic dm maps... Just from a different quake

I have to agree this is an oddball map to have. It doesn't play the same as it does in q3/ql. However, I see it getting mymap'd all the time.
I've been meaning to do some digging and see how many people are mymaping this then leaving when the map starts just to grief the people who don't like it (i have certainly seen this happening). Need to see how many people mymap it because they actually want to play it.

because not one admin consulted the regular dm players on what THEY thought about it. not everyone who plays on DM visits the forums and have no voice. Dm is dm1 to dm8. if you want these weird shitty maps put them on mutant which is the whole point of mutant. no one plays on mutant because they dont fucking like them, we want dm1 to dm8! these shitty maps kill the server each and every single time  but no it seems people can mymap and the map turns up in between the classic dm maps.

Thanks for your feedback. We've had several voices expressing a desire to add just a touch more variety without trying to disrupt the flow of dm1-dm8 too much.
I could adjust them so that the mymaps are played in-between dm1-dm8 rotations instead of having mymaps stuck in the middle. You'd have 1 mymap, dm1-dm8 then 2 mymaps, then back to dm1-dm8. Depending on who is playing, these maps can rotate fast or slow. I am in a data gathering stage right now just seeing how it plays out.

I can understand your point of view and I've certainly been through changes to our ffa servers that some people didn't like. My first suggestion in this case was indeed to take a vote.

Take a step back and just give it some constructive thought instead of going full reddit/twitter and saying RIP. I have been monitoring the server for how players are reacting to this change. It's not an overwhelming server killer change. Players do have a voice, we read the server chat.

I'm not sure why you would think we are out to kill the dm server. We put in a lot of effort to keep this place going.
We will respond to further complaints about this if they arise, if a lot of dm regulars don't like these changes we can tweak things to help balance it back out.

The changes seem great so far.
I'd add though that the "people my-mapping and leaving" is incorrect. When you leave, your place in mymap is gone with you. I think it was changed to that (or I noticed it) about 6 months ago. Been awhile since I've seen you on DM but hey,  I'm rarely there

If you re-read my comment, it says "mymaping this then leaving when the map starts."

I made changes to mymap a few months ago to fix the duplicate mymap bug that let people grief your mymap slot. I also added the output "mymap queue =>" to help clear up some confusion about what has been mymap'd.

I know I know, the queue displays out of order hahaha . That was an unexpected result stemming from how the [now ancient] version of Ruby it's running handles things compared to the latest version of Ruby that I normally code in. I haven't had time to go back and fix that up, but it's probably due for a fix by now.

We don't have to be on dm to see what's going on, we have some nice console tools that let us monitor things. We have about 5 admins watching the dm server at different times throughout the day.

The other admins have been providing some good feedback in our admin channel too. I'll quote one comment: "my impression is that most people are at least intrigued, if not a little excited to have some new options. at least as far as the new maps go."


We are currently discussing the order in which these new mymaps are inserted into the rotation. If anyone else has opinions on this feel free to share.

The rotation has been changed a bit.

It is pretty much back to how it was before, but with a 3rd mymap slot after each dm1-dm8 rotation. If nobody mymaps then it only plays one server-picked mymap then back to dm1-dm8, just like before.
