Weapons doing next to no damage
« on: October 30, 2021, 05:38:59 AM »
Over the past little while I have noticed on dm that weapons are not doing damage to certain players. I personally saw someone spawn only had 100 health it took 2 BFG shots and a rocket to kill the player. other times I have personally emptied 5 direct hit rockets and splash damage and players still survive. granted there is mega and or armor on most maps but something just doesnt seem right here. i am not the only person to notice this. I get taken out with 2 blasta shots while I can empty entire clips of ammo on a freshly spawned player and they somehow live  :forceac:

Weapon and damage calculations are handled 100% at the server, not by the clients, so this is not a cheating issue. This is an aim issue. You're just not hitting the players as hard as you think you are.

You saw a freshly spawned player take 2 BFG shots and finished by a rocket, well if that person firing the BFG has no idea what their doing, those shots might not do as much damage as you think. I personally watched the BFG energy ball fly by my face on dm4 and it barely did any damage to me at all. The real damage happens when the ball hits the ground or a wall.

I get taken out with 2 blasta shots while I can empty entire clips of ammo on a freshly spawned player and they somehow live

No. Blasters do 15 damage, so if you got hit with 2 blaster shots you health was reduced by 30 (assuming you have no armor), you either had 29 health or got hit with something else and didn't notice.

I have personally emptied 5 direct hit rockets and splash damage and players still survive. granted there is mega and or armor on most maps but something just doesnt seem right here.

Maps like dm8 have red armor, megahealth, power screens and shards everywhere. It's possible the guy had mega (200hp), red armor (200), that's 400 health points plus some shards and or power armor, he could easily survive your 4-5 rockets or even 4-5 rails. If the player was waiting for someone to join, they could be running around just collecting armor shards for 10 minutes and have 700+ armor by the time you try to frag him.

My point is there are no cheats involved here, it's just game mechanics, aim and understanding how health/armor stack. Also don't forget some weapons have a touch of randomness to the damage they inflict: shotgun and supershotgun spread patterns are different for every shot, rockets do a random amount of damage within a range (both hits and splash), etc.

Do you have demos of these strange happenings? I suggest you record your games (always possible something awesome happens and you will then have a record to show), so then you can share. That goes a lot further than "one time this guy shot me with something and it did more damage than I thought it should...'

I've had simular expeireinces.
Dude spawns and just stands there. One direct rail shot (close range) should take him out (-100) Newp!! he just stand there looking at me. LOL!

Things to remember when using a BFG...

Don't fire it into a room at somebody way on the other side of that room, and then duck back through a door and run the hell away. You need to maintain a clear line of sight to that person you are firing at, or else it will do very little damage to them unless it's a direct hit... and I'm not really sure, but maybe even then it might be survivable if the ball has traveled far enough.

Don't worry so much about hitting them directly with the blast. If they are running away from you, you probably won't hit them. Instead, maintain line of sight on them, and then try to aim the shot to a place on the floor or a wall that will be as close to them as possible when it hits. BFG's work with splash damage. Someone can be sort of far away, and if you get a line of sight on them and fire a BFG at the ground nearby yourself within that line of sight, you can still deal them a decent amount of damage from far away. If they are under 100 health, you can get a kill on them pretty easy.

Line of sight is most important of all. If someone is shooting a BFG at you from a ways off, even if the ball goes off on a wall nearby, if you can duck behind a box or something to get out of the line of sight of the shooter, the blast will deal you less damage.

I've had simular expeireinces.

Impossible. Range doesn't matter with a railgun. If your box is in the path of the shot (it can go through as many players as you put in front of it), you take 100 damage. However, there are many places on a map where a person can easily collect armor shards or health stimpacks quickly after spawning. Even 1 health stimpack or 1 armor shard will require a person with a railgun to shoot you twice before you die.

Hello, I'd like to put in a complaint about the player "0rbisson".

My rockets do almost no damage to him and he keeps teleporting all around the map. Also, his rail bends around corners and do way too much damage to me. I had a full 200 armor and megahealth and he one shotted me from across the map.  :-\

Please ban him, I believe he is using a health/armor/ammo cheat and a lag hack. :-\ Sad....

Near as I can tell,  all that you mentioned except the lag is calculated server side.

Bendy rail though..  would love to see a demo of that :)

I remember when there was an issue with players being invisible.

I remember the player who used a crate model on DM8  :lolsign:

Yeah, from what I remember (someone else feel free to interject here if this ain't correct) somehow there was a skin or model called "null" that was uploaded to the server... possibly as something that might've been required for some kind of spectator mode thing... and they were using it in FFA. I remember about the time I first showed up here back in 07 I think, on at least one occasion I was getting shotgunned to death by someone who was invisible. Seem to remember it might've been |iR|Devious, but I'm not totally sure.

And then there was the box model.

I also remember someone had a spawn pad model. I think Quadz either took it down or the person who made it decided voluntarily to add some stick figure arms and legs and weapon models to it, not sure.

I never had anyone use the box or spawn pad on me. Shortly after I started playing regularly, I got tired of all the dumb models, deleted all of them, and turned off model downloading in my config.

The box model was never used by anyone that was very good.  I might fall for it once, but then I paid more attention and looked for a extra box in the room.

To be fair, there are instances of weird stuff in q2 like shooting a rocket directly at someone, seeing it directly hit their model, and yet it passes through them.  Same with rails occasionally.  It is possible albeit not often … q2 has some of the strangest weapon mechanics of any game, and things that should hit players don’t, or when you aren’t aiming and know you should’ve missed, the game calculates a hit.  This is aside from lag, pl, or any other predictable factors, and definitely not cheats… it’s just q2.  ;)
