DM server suggestions: max players, new maps

Hi there admin/console/root people.  I have a couple suggestions, based on my own experience as well as some feedback from other players over the last year or so.

  • Reduce the max number of players on DM that overflow into FFA from 16 (not counting wallfly) to something more like 10 or 12. FFA server has a great map variety (like Mutant) and 16 active players on DM is quite a bit busy.  It would be nice to distribute the player load a bit. So instead of sometimes 16 players on dm and 2 or 3 on FFA, that would change to 10 on DM and 8 on FFA, for example.
  • Add some more map variety to the mymap-able maps on the dm server, just to spice it up a bit. It has been a very long time since any changes to the maps in that list to choose from.

Things to consider:

As one of the slightly better than average players, I feel like my ability to win every map would probably be helped by limiting the number of opponents and thus increasing the likelihood that I will be able to find available health before being shot to 0 and sustain whatever kill streak I might be on. Is that a good thing? Probably not for everyone else. I'd tend to be more in favor of any change that helps the lower tiers chances than one that might benefit better players more. And many of the lower tier players engage in things like camping the RA and MH lifts on DM2 (and camping in general on EVERY map) and it's obvious that their success rate goes up with larger crowds, more chaos, and their opponents have less ability to... "circle back"... ;) ... to the campers with a full complement of health in order to kill them.

I am in favor of such a tactic if it will encourage more traffic on the vanilla, mutant, or ffa servers. Back in the day, Vanilla used to be the main server where everyone played. These DM maps are getting old and chalky, folks. Get some variety in your lives! Or maybe the concept of variety should be FORCED them until they choose to want it. #Murica

Nope, sorry pepp5, i can't agree, a maximum of 16 active players on TS DM is fantastic, it shouldn't be changed.

If it's not already the case then it'd be better if players redirected from TS DM were only sent to whatever servers already have players on them.

TS DM is popular for a reason, if you force too many players away from it to servers with maps they might not know or like then we could see an exodus from TS DM that would be well justified and very damaging to the Q2 scene.


Yep, the mymap map list could do with some kind of player polling, God save us from having to play corn2 ever again.  :P

I'm for sure in favor of some more variety and a slightly lowered cap for DM, 16 is just a bit much for some of these maps.

I think you should increase the player number from 16 to 20. Days when DM is full and i get directed to the 2nd server i just leave. And yes DM is popular for a reason. Dont mess up a good thing by getting fancy

That would be wonderful, however it's not how things work. You can only set a single address to redirect to.  For example, when the PF TDM servers are full players get redirected to the GTV server so they can still watch the games on that full server.

I personally HATE when DM has more than 10 people, it's just complete chaos. You get spawn killed non stop, BFG balls flying everywhere, your score goes from being based on skills to being totally random. However, when it's like that, I just go to another server. I understand some people enjoy the chaos.

For TS DM i've seen that most people usually go to TS Railz the most, if you set TS DM redirect to TS Railz then i guess that'd be the most popular redirect for TS DM.

I guess it's a case of mapping out which other server most people go to the most from any one server eg TS DM > TS Railz.

The current 16+1 model seems very stable and it doesn't look like the amount of players is the problem, i think it's really more about how many low-ping bastards and campers are on TS DM when it's full.  :P

The Russian playground DM server is almost always in a state of chaos (and also has low-ping bastards and campers) regardless of the amount of people in that server at any one time, it's a brutal 24/7 bloodbath, i love it.  8)

Don't nerf the player amount on TS DM, it's tiresome searching for people to shoot on DM servers when there's anything less than 12 players active and peak times mean chaos no matter how many players are on a server, 16+1 for TS DM has earned its place and 'fixing' stuff that isn't broken is the bane of our times.

not bothered either way leave it as is or lower it, dont think itll make much diff really, but less players will mean more bored campers which is always good :)

The settings on DM are the result of years of tuning to find a middle ground of player enjoyment. The max players is in a sweet spot.
I'm not opposed to voting on new mymap choices.
