Chaingun -how to make it sound slower....

 I noticed in a video featuring Vae vs Haunted recently that the chain gun sounds like it fires at the same rate as the machine gun. Is there a way to adjust the machine gun sounds in pak0 so that it pops a little slower, and hence also the chain gun? I played a FeeBSD version of Q2 way, way back when BSD was cool and the machine gun somehow had a slower sounding rate of fire which oddly seems to help while using it, but I could not figure out how to emulate that feature other than removing one of the five machine gun sounds in pak0 which results in a spluttering kind of misfiring gun sound rather than a synced up slower sound. Just curious if anyone knows this on a long afternoon.

Happy to hear vae's near only win on me is circulating as he hoped  ;)

Wouldn't it be easier to replace the sounds in a different pak that overrides stock?

Yep, that's what I did actually. I silenced one of the five machine gun .wavs but it sounded like ass. I suppose with audacity one could do something but I'm not sure what. Slow down the pops, or draw  three out a bit and silence two.... Not a big deal, just wondered if anyone else noticed that oddness in the video really.

Like I guess you know already, there's 5 individual bullet burst sounds. But if you replace the 2 and 4 with null sounds, because it's an odd number of sounds the game uses, you're gonna have 2 quicker pops somewhere. And since the machinegun uses the same sounds, it's gonna sound even more obvious when using that weapon.

You can't add dead air to the ends of the sounds and hope that will space it out either, because the game will play the files at a specific rate. Which is why if you try to add a lot of ambient echo/reverb with a long decay time to a bullet sound, it's probably gonna end up just sounding muddled and noisy when using the chaingun - you'll get assloads of trailing reverbs at volumes that start drowning out the bullet pops. The sound files will START at a specific rate, but theres really no limit to the length of the sound, so by the time it plays, 1, 2, 3, 4, and then 5, you could still be hearing the tail end of the first 1 sound when it loops back to the 1 again. So when picking sound files to use for bullets, it best to pick ones with shorter reverbs and the echo at a reduced volume.

I haven't seen the video. You can post it if you wanna. Perhaps the video uploading compression process dropped the frames and the corresponding audio at just the right frequency to create that effect. Unless he's using a client that allows you to modify the play rates of bullets. I've never heard of one that can do that, seems likely impossible without modding the game dll.

One trick I do sometimes. If you have just ONE sound file for a bullet sound you want, make 2 copies of it, name one as the 1, and the other as the 3. Then take the 1, put it into an audio editor and detune it DOWN about a half step. Then name that one 2. Copy it and name it 5. Re-open the 1 and detune it UP about a half step, and name that one as the 4. Although sometimes you just gotta tune things up or down even less than that or more, it just depends on what sounds best to you. Just don't put any 2 sounds tuned the same that will repeat back to back or it will sound weird.

Found them as part of some larger pak 15+ years ago, and I've changed out a lot since then but always kept these.

That said, they don't really "slow down" the chain, more like double the speed but make it smoother.

Thanks for these. They are also one of my favourites, nice and gravelly to my ears, but smooth at the same time and I have come across them in various paks as well, but it's nice to have them isolated so I will keep these aside with my other various sounds.
