Probably a stupid question, but I'm old, grumpy, and its been a while.
Aside from running at a lower resolution, is there any other way to increase the console text size?
I just got my first new PC in almost 10 years, and I'm 'tweaking' everything to my liking. I opted for a FULL HD screen instead of 4K, but even at lowly 1080 resolutions, these old eyes can't read the damn console without putting my face into the monitor.

First of all, I think it depends on what Quake2 client you are running. Plain old Q2 3.20 client, I don't think there is a variable for HUD size.
I see a shitload of people using Q2pro these days. I don't, so I'm not familiar with it at all. But after a little bit of looking online, I think it might be one of these:
ui_scale
con_scale ("console size" most likely, probably not that one)
scr_scale
I'm still using an old 2008 version of R1Q2 myself. In R1Q2 it's
gl_hudscale
And if you're using a custom pak file with custom HUD numbers, you'll wanna try different sizes to see which one is about the right size but displays with clearly defined edges. I'm personally using...
gl_hudscale "2"
...and I found that using anything in between the whole numbers makes the edges of the numbers and icons blurry, sometimes pixelated, and generally shitty looking. Like for example, a value of 1.2 or 1.7 rather than 1.0 or 2.0.

If hud scaling doesn't do it for you I found a yellow conchars.pcx helped me a lot.
Just drop it into baseq2/pics to override the green one. If that doesn't do the trick then you might have to copy it to the mod/pics folder for whatever mods you play.
The physical file in the tree overrides the green one in the pak0.pak but if the mod distro has a green one in a pak somewhere I think it overrides it back.
