I thought there was a thread somewhere that Quadz made years ago about compression techniques used in recording these days and why almost all records have no volume dynamics anymore. But I couldn't find it. So I started this thread instead. So if whomever has control of the levers and buttons can find that thread and wants to move this to there, feel free.
Saw this piece of interesting info in my email. Apparently Buddy Holly mic'd his pick flapping as well as the amp when recording Peggy Sue. Interesting. Doesn't sound great. The recording still sounds bad. But interesting. I suppose you'd get the same kinda sound if you added someone playing an acoustic over the mix, so... nothing really "useful" is learned here, just random facts for Buddy Holly trivia.

Finally got a new PC. I was originally wanting to build one piece by piece, but it proved to be a little more cost effective to just by a dirt cheap pre-built and upgrade it little by little.
I was originally gonna go with a little HP system that came with an Nvidia GT 1650 Super 6Gb video card, but I later discovered that it did NOT come with a standard sized PSU like it deceptively appeared to in the graphic they showed, but instead came with a smaller
proprietary
power supply, with special unique plugs that paired with the
ALSO PROPRIETARY
motherboard. One thing I've replaced on PC's more than anything is power supplies. If I can't run by a MicroCenter or Best Buy and pick up a new PSU off the shelf when I need one... TO-DAY,... then I'm not interested.
iBuyPower Element Mini 167a
(w/ tax paid $750, all with Amazon egift card codes from doing online surveys, so actually paid $0)
Win10 home
ASRock 320m/ac motherboard (little mini-ATX sized thing) (2 ram slots, 32G total possible capacity)
Ryzen 5 3600 cpu w/ AMD stealth cooler
1 x 8Gb ddr4 ram - will upgrade to 16Gb (2 x 8Gb) RGB ddr4 soon
256Gb SSD - will be upgrading with additional Western Digital 1Tb M.2 SSD card in the next week or two
Nvidia GT 730 2Gb video card (cheap-o garbage video card, might upgrade it later to something at least 4 or 6Gb, not sure)
500w PSU - not sure what brand, as long as it lasts a few years, I don't care
Mini-ATX Glass panel front and left side case
3 x RGB fans (2 front, 1 rear)
It's a "gaming PC", but I mainly got it for recording. Bought a Scarlett Focusrite 2i2 recording interface back in February, but didn't want to use with the old machine, which is running Win7 and it's old and the HDD is old and could die any minute. It's probably got spyware dug into it from the online surveys I always do. Gonna keep doing surveys and "naughty browsing" on it since it's already fucked up and slow and glitchy, and only go to "good wholesome Christian sites" like Tastyspleen on the new box.
Anyway, got the 2i2 hooked up and all it's stuff installed. It comes with a low-end version of Ableton Live and/or ProTools. Not sure which one is better, but I picked Ableton Live Lite 11 and installed that one (2Gb). Hooked up the big Sterling condenser mic to it, put it right on my 4x12 Vintage30 Carvin cab (Orange Rockerverb 100 mk3 head) and listened to the live playback through headphones. Sounded pretty good, didn't notice any pick flapping on the strings leaking into the mic, also didn't pick up the noisy-as-hell AC running.
So once I get some disk space added for holding my drum samples and any new recordings, I'm gonna start screwing around trying to find the least annoying DAW to use for writing, and then finally start getting some of these pieces of songs fleshed out that've been in my head for last few years.

I remember the discussion.
Although quadz had a lot of input, I think the reply you are looking for was by random. You’ll have to scroll down quite a bit, it was a lengthy conversation.

Perhaps/probably that's what I was thinking of.

I don't worship the devil. Jesus is Lord, friend. He died for your sins. He will forgive you if you just ask.
