User Abuse Towards Others

There's a player who has joined the server 2 times holding slots. All he does is attack people and spam harsh things towards users playing. He is also showing bot activity bc he is walking into walls shooting at nothing. Hes also voting the same map over and over again. Can we do nothing about this??? His name atm is Panjo^02

Post a demo if you think someone's cheating, and we'll review it. Panjoo can be a pot stirrer, but I extremely doubt he's doing anything to cheat.

When i say bot i don't mean it in a advantage or cheat way. It is a bot walking forward, jumping, shooting walls and talking smack. Admin is correct it is this user. Can we get a MOD into the game often?

I thought he was bullshitting about the bot part. But nah. He's either using some kind of extended repeating alias, or it's an actual program that's controlling the movement. Every so often he repeats the same insults with someone elses name, and I'm guess he sits there and manually inserts it, because when it names a new person, the automatic crouch>shoot>forward>jump movement pauses.

Why not a whole mute or ban? Seems to me like he's done enough and wasted enough of your time to warrant a bucket of STFU and GTFO being dumped over his head.

Reasons relating to VPN use. (If banning were straightforward I'd indeed agree we've crossed that threshold.)

I'm contemplating some approaches to auto-detecting VPN connections, but even if they prove effective they'll need to be coded.

It may be that 'deputizing' some folks with lrcon (as you and Panjoo were mentioning in the shoutbox the other day) might be the best defense in the near term.

It's a script or bot of some kind. It shoots intermittently, repeats taunts, runs backwards, doesn't seem to work to acquire weapons and when it drives itself into a corner or water it doesn't work to escape and often drowns. I watched it walk backward off a spawn point and into lava.

Deputizing a few players that you trust is a great idea.  Hopefully, they are active players and can kick him until he gets bored with trying to reconnect.  Maybe consider removing the map vote thing for a while too.  A couple of players intentionally vote for the same maps, over and over, just because they know others don't like them.  They don't even play the map.  They vote and spectate.

Someone joined with the name P20 and testpilot^Alf not sure if its related to him.. however it disconnected asap once joined within 5sec. I believe he is sitting on 2 slots. Another way perhaps is to FORCE AC on all users or can try banning his name partial like (Panjo^20) Panjo*.*2*.*
I myself use a VPN on the internet, it would be a hassle to have to disconnect it only to reconnect it.

You deliberately use a VPN to play Quake? Doesn't that tend to drastically increase your ping?

NO i'm automatically connected to my VPN when Windows loads. I don't disconnect unless there is something going on with my modem/internet and I need to test, to see what's going on.

It looks like he is back not only is he spamming, he is constantly name swapping out. And 2 connections of course wasted.

This abuse has hit new levels.  I wish something could be done.  Most of today, there have been at least 3 of these chat bots on.  And the one guy (Panj^.....) chooses the campgrounds map every 5 minutes.  They are intentionally trying to drive players away.  I'd hate to see the server popularity die because of a few twits.

There were indeed 3 when I checked the server after seeing these posts here.

What I'm currently doing is banning IPs as I become aware of them. (But obviously that leaves gaps of many hours when I'm asleep or otherwise away from the computer.)

Since I don't have an automated solution yet, I'm looking into setting up "lrcon", but I'm not really happy with the options so far (the command syntax is somewhat abstruse, which may limit who can use them effectively.)

The server is configured to not play the same map more than once every 30 minutes, but nonetheless the point is taken.

For now, I've changed it so that "mymap" is removed, and a single random custom map will be played in between each dm1-dm8 rotation.
