Auto-forward when server is full - is this possible?
« on: March 16, 2019, 05:17:10 PM »
Is it possible to be auto-forwarded to the classic server when one tries to connect to the DM server and it's full? Is this something that you'd be OK with, quadz? If this isn't possible, or isn't something you want to see happen, is it possible to give them a message like, "DM server full? Try the "classic" server instead!"

The goal is twofold: One, to give players an alternative when the DM server is full (which happens semi-frequently it seems), and also to increase the population on the classic server. I imagine many (if not most) players that play on the DM servers, and the other popular servers, don't come to the forums, so they simply join the most-populated servers as returned by their server browser (like the one that comes with the Q2 starter kit here). If classic gets DM overflow, then the hope (for me) is that it'll have more-consistent activity. I've heard from a  few players on the DM server that they would like to play on the classic server, but it's always empty.

Looking over SVC_DirectConnect() in sv_main.c, it appears there is indeed a cvar called sv_redirect_address which may be used for this purpose.

So it's a possibility.

A concern is that it will break WallFly, randomly. Once in awhile, WallFly loses its slot when the map changes, and has to reconnect. If the server were full, WallFly would get redirected to the wrong server and remain stuck there indefinitely.

This is enough of a concern that I'm reluctant to try it out.

(BTW, be careful what you wish for: If I did try it, I'd probably redirect to my favorite server instead, i.e. vanilla. :) )

:lolsign: understood :) Thanks for looking into it. I figured classic is the closest server, map rotation-wise, to DM, so I figured it would be a good alternative.

Some servers seem down currently Quadz, don't know if it's just a hiccup that'll fix itself, maintenance or what, but just in case, I mention it.

It's always been that if you mymap and disconnect before the map goes live, it's deleted from the queue.

Occasinally, someone will stick around until their map loads, and THEN disconnect, which is not appreciated. (Currently the only recourse is a full mute, as there's no provision for blocking just mymap usage.)

At least these days, the chosen map has to be roughly compatible with the number of players active on the server. (No more mapping sewer64 on a 3-player server; etc.)

Any way to prevent people from trolling with mymap? By that I mean they join the server, mymap a map, then immediately discconnect, forcing whoever's playing to play a map that nobody there necessarily wanted to play in the first place. Maybe have it check to see if the player who issued the command

Seems like that did the trick, quadz. I'm sure everyone is happy to have their lower pings back :) Thanks!

OK, they made a routing change that appears to have resolved the issue I was seeing here.

Everyone else's pings back to normal?
