What mouse are you using?
« on: January 02, 2018, 11:16:34 AM »
Curious about what players use these days.

I'm currently using:
Microsoft Wheel-mouse optical 1.1a overclocked at 500hz
 4.5 sensitivity
.2 accel

You want zero accel.

I loved my razer deathadder 2013. Download the driver and control any settings through that, with any mouse.

I preferred a sensitivity around 6 or a little below if I recall correctly.

I used to use ...

Zowie FK1
DPI 400
Sensitivity 2.2
m_directinput 2 (R1Q2 command -- basically raw mouse input)

Doesn't matter what Windows settings are as directinput bypasses windows sensitivity and acceleration.

Mousepad I'm using at the moment is a Steelseries QcK, I think. I used a Steelseries 9HD for years though, and really liked it.

Lots of factors affect your sensitivity in Q2, from FOV to resolution to FPS settings.

I have one right now. I've almost completely worn out my left click button. The spring action and click on the left top button was almost completely gone, and it had started double clicking every time even when you'd only click once (a sign the mouse is dying), so I took the mouse apart looking to spray some electrical contact cleaner in there and hopefully reset whatever had shifted and get it working again. The insides of the mouses are quite complex. There's a little arched copper sheet over the clicker button contacts whereas my old Logitech mouses just had plastic spring-loaded push buttons within the clicker module. Anyway, I couldn't do much to make the pressure/spring-action on the left click button like new again, but spraying contact cleaner in and around the clicker modules did cure the double-click problem. Still using it. Can't time railgun shots worth a shit with it anymore though, but I'll be damned if I'm gonna be stupid enough to spend almost 100 bucks on another corded laser mouse again.

It's a "good enough" mouse, I suppose I'd recommend it. But only because it's just about the only corded laser mouse you can find anymore. 10 years ago, you could find a plain old nothing fancy Logitech LS-1 laser mouse at Walmart for 20 bucks. Nobody makes plain old everyday use laser mouses anymore. They've become "gaming mouses" now, and now they charge you a premium for the motherfuckers as if they're a new high-tech form of mouse. They are absolutely NOT. However, In Razer's defense, maybe the price "could" be warranted by the unique internal design of their product. But in my opinion, their design is NOT an improvement and the old style cheaper clicker modules cost less, last just as long, and are cheaper to produce and cheaper for the retail customer. OBVIOUSLY... "cheap" or "better" isn't what Razer is after.

I've gotta agree on this.
I bought the deathadder elite a while ago and wasn't really impressed (especially for the price) I took it back to wal-mart and told them to put it up their ass.

Download the driver and control any settings through that, with any mouse.

I saw potential behind the software, but found it not satisfactory when it came to tweaking.
Anytime i changed the dpi or acceleration value the mouse became jittery or wouldn't input the change in variables.

Not a bad mouse, but I just didn't see a reason to pay a shit ton of money for when the mouse I'm currently using works fine.

You're not going to be impressed by any mouse at any price. Buying an expensive Razer mouse isn't going to improve your ability to make the necessary precise movements with your wrist in order to put your crosshair in the right spot to land a shot, and it isn't gonna correct your poor timing of when to the hit the fire button in combination with that motion. What a better mouse WILL do is have a higher polling rate and improved fine accuracy when compared to a cheaper shittier mouse with worse specs. And like I said, to shoot better in a video game, that's gonna be up to YOU. A new fancy mouse isn't gonna do it for you. But where you might see instant results would be when using the mouse for image editing and doing freehand art related things with a mouse. A cheap shitty inaccurate mouse is gonna detect fine movement when zoomed way in on an art project as a sawtooth kinda square matrix, whereas a mouse with better specs is gonna draw a straighter line for you. But these days, people who do lots of art related shit on computers are using these touchscreen things with stylus pens.

I'm partial to mouses with invisible lasers rather than those optical or infrared ones. They emit a light, and if you use the mouse without a mousepad on a naked laminated desk surface, it can cause the optical sensor to feedback and freak out randomly. You'll be playing Q2, you hear someone around a corner, you pause and ready up with a rocket to blast them when they come by, and as you turn, for no fucking apparent reason, your view shoots straight up at the ceiling and spins around like a ballerina... and the guy you were gonna ambush fucking kills you. :frustration:

Had that happen to me more times than I care to remember way back when I used an optical mouse. At this point, I've been scrubbing a mouse over this desktop so long, most the glossy lamination is gone and there's actually a portion where the particle board fibers are exposed. :D This desk looks like a total piece of junked shit after 10 years of heavy use.

I'm using a Logitech G500, which it would appear received mixed reviews for gaming.

Working from home, coding all day, I like that the mouse weighting/balance can be customized:

A good mouse made a big difference for me, but I'm a bad example for what's being discussed.

I had a bad setup for q2 almost the whole time including my mouse. My way of playing was always movement-based and tons of jumps, trick jumps etc whatever. That style was fun for me obviously else I wouldn't have went for it. But the combination of playing like that with a subpar mouse put a big dent in my accuracy. In early 2013 I bought that "deathadder 2013" and it was comparable to me going from dial up to low ping. I found myself out chaining everyone. All of the sudden I had a railgun. It was a big difference for me.

A question I still have though is weather or not there are really any differences in optical sensor mice?
I know DPI, driver software, and  polling rate etc., are a few differences but are there any others?
As mentioned at the beginning, I'm using a Microsoft Wheel-mouse optical 1.1a. I've tried the Razer deathadder elite (the one with a 5g optical sensor) and personally didn't notice much of a difference between the Razer deathadder and the Microsoft WMO.

Also is there any difference between optical and laser sensors in mice?

I forgot to mention I overclocked my mouse to 1000hz

I have considered upgrading my mouse because of DPI... a concern I have is weather or not higher DPI affects the stability of the mouse.
For example, if I increase the dpi will it add acceleration? Or cause stability issues?

I forget my exact dpi, but I know I'd use a marginally low value for it. You typically want a lower dpi then compensate with an above average sensitivity.

.But where you might see instant results would be when using the mouse for image editing and doing freehand art related things with a mouse.   I'm a little late but can you explain this a little more? My lines are decently straight, but more specifically:
