How To Spot & Report Wallhacks?
« on: November 28, 2017, 10:26:01 PM »
Someone should really type a brief guide on how to spot walling and how to record a demo of the suspected player.
The guide should answer the following:
-What are wallhacks?
-Signs someone is using wallhacks
-How to record demo while spectating suspected waller.

Sincerely,
SlobbOnMyCob

Well since wallhacks allow the user to see through walls, obviously the person would be paying an inordinate or unusual amount of attention to walls. If you spectate a player and they seem to be watching walls that are in the direction of nearby hallways where other players might be running around, they "could" be using a wallhack. Then again, they could also just be looking at the plain old wall, or maybe reacting to a sound cue produced by another player on the other side of a wall.

From the few wallhacks I've seen examples of, they make the walls, floors, and ceilings appear to be semi-transparent while allowing "entities" (health boxes, ammo boxes, weapons, armor, player characters) to remain entirely solid and highly visible.

Used to be a kid who went by the name of [EoM]Skillz who once accidentally posted screenshots of himself using a wallhack. I guess he got so used to using it that he didn't realize he hadn't turned it OFF before he took scoreboard screenshots to post to shit talk people... and in those same screenshots you could see health boxes showing through walls. :D
http://forum.tastyspleen.net/quake/index.php?topic=11802.msg121499#msg121499

But honestly, I don't think anyone who plays around here even cares enough TO cheat anymore. You get one or two dweebs on DM or Vanilla who will smack talk as if winning or losing a map means anything, but 99% of people just play for the fun of it. And with that kind of climate, I'd imagine that cheating is very very minimal to non-existent. Besides, in FFA, wallhacking just really isn't all that useful. Some people in the past have done it ANYWAY. But... they're idiots, they'd do ANYTHING in spite of good sense.

How to record a wallhacker? Go into spectator mode. Follow the player. Then start recording a demo. To record a demo, simply drop down the console and type "record DEMONAME" (DEMONAME being anything you want to name the demo file, something like demo1 or wallhack1 or wallhack2 or whatever). That will begin recording. To stop the recording, type "stop" in console. I forget exactly where it saves demos to, and it might depend on whatever client you're using. But I think it saves them to the "C:/Quake2/baseq2/demos" folder, at least it does for me when using R1q2 when connected to the DM server.

I know its not a very useful hack, but still it's irritating since it can drive new players away.

Being only 22 years old myself and with the direction videos games are going, I can see more people giving more pc games (like quake2) a try since they're not pay2win or pay2play.

The learning curve for any quake game is high enough as it is already, lets not make things worse by allowing our fellow gamer's to think cheaters go unpunished.

sincerely,

I can probably write a short guide on how to spot cheaters.

I'll have a think about what the indicators are and then put something together. Essentially, spotting cheaters is an experience thing, but also takes a certain amount of logical thinking to analyse and deduct certain "possibilities".

I would appreciate that. It's especially hard to do since most players have been on quake 2 for years, so there's a lot of high skill players who know wtf to listen out for. Which can honestly appear as tho someone is cheating, when they just have situational awareness when it comes to sounds, armor locations, etc....

I wouldn't even worry about it. Nobody's cheating... unless YOU are. Are you? History has taught many of us that those who obsess the most about cheating are often the ones doing it.

Focalor,
That's very true, however, I was already fully aware of the stigma that would come with making a thread about walling before posting. I use r1q2 anti-cheat client and wouldn't mind posting a copy of my cfg.
With that said, how do you know there's no one cheating? There isn't anything to tell the community what to look for???
I find it baffling that there isn't something players can reference to spot unfair practices. No one is asking for a guide on how to create wall-hacks (There's probably more guides on how to create wall-hacks, then on how to spot and report them).

Then again maybe I'm just an asshole and the earth is flat.

You'd be surprised. A lot of people cheat or have cheated, and cheats these days are quite sophisticated and harder to spot, unlike those old school rat bots that spin around like crazy.

Of course. "This ain't our first rodeo" as the saying goes. We had at one time a thriving 1v1 & TDM scene here. (Notice DaHanG is still moderator of that sub-forum.)

Problem is, these days the few individuals making lots of noise about "cheats" are low-tier walking-Dunning-Kruger-effect goofballs like Ratchet and friends who play only FFA and who seem to think any player with ears and aim MUST BE CHEATING!11!11one!!

If you do write a guide, please spend plenty of time on false-positives. For example: the low tick-rate of q2 demos provides replays of movement that snaps from sample to sample in a way that doesn't represent the original player. (And the slower you timescale a Q2 demo playback, the more it looks like an aimbot.) Etc. etc.

Last thing we need are a gaggle of low-information FFA players with no concept of Q2's high skill cap running around with a fresh "spot hackers" guide tucked under their arm, think they're seeing cheaters everywhere. ;)

I get what you're saying, and it's true that giving those people more fodder to accuse would be a bad idea. I'm not even sure I could really write a guide on how to detect cheaters because a lot of it taps into the real arcane aspects of Quake 2. I'm able to spot cheaters because I took the time and effort to understand the psychological and physical aspects of Quake 2 to the point were I've become hypersensitive to anything out of the ordinary. Or to put it in plain terms: I know what's possible (and likely) and what isn't. I'm not sure if people detect such things unless they have that kind of experience.

If I do get round to writing a guide (and think it's worth it; Q2 is a dead game after all) then I'll be sure to stress that not every player that has aim or perception is a cheater, and that demos aren't particularly proof of cheaters. In fact, unless you're sitting in the same room watching a cheater play then it's almost impossible to prove that they cheat, so detecting cheaters is really more like educated/logical guessing.

I figured there should be something about REAL wallhacking in this thread.

has hang ever won a q2 tourny on lann? for some reason i doubt that... maybe same reason as naym... maybe its cause they are 1 of the many wallhackers in q2?   scratch out the maybe's.

In hindsight, this quote is rather humorous considering it's author.
