The FUTURE of Quake 2.

Thinking ahead, if Q2 is still active, in about 10-15  years, this is what I predict.

- everybody is a super expert at jumping and bunny hopping. I'm talking as good as Pitri and Haunted.  New jumps for q2dm1 will be invented, including the impossible but possible, jumping from mega to upperRL (along the 3 bullet strips area).  This is an almost impossible jump but its theoretically possible, by double jumping off the steps going down to the water. Ask [TC]Dinsum if your not sure what I mean. he almost made it one time.

- new 3rd party programs will enable a player to push 1 button and he will do a series of incredible jumps, in mega etc.. alowing the player to freely aim at anywhere he wants while the computer does the jumping. Can you imaging someone jumping to armor then mega while aiming at the CG area the whole time?

- Railgun shooting will be evolved, there is a new style of aiming, that few of us are learning, where you aim behind your opponent, this is hard to explain but its results are better than what we're currently seeing today. People are expert at flick shots and usually land at least 75% or better. Average railgun % will increase from the average of todays 30 to at least 40 %.

- players will memorize every single sound for pickups, such that  no matter where their opponent is they will know exactly where they are. Some may claim to have this ability, but we're talking mainstream.

- cheats will evolve and become harder to detect. Everyone will propably be using some form of cheat, whether it is walling, brightskins, new models etc.. accusing players of cheating is normal, instead of defending themselves, they will simply ignore, no matter how big their ego is.

- 3rd party cheat, allows display of every opponents and teammates health, armor, and what weapon they are carrying in the top right hand corner in small fonts, allowing them to see whos weak and whos got what. Weak players will be highlighted in red, and the closer the player is to you, he will be at the top of the list. If a player has Quad he will be highlighted blue.

- complete overhaul of the pics, making the game super easier to see players and projectiles etc.. (not like todays brightskins)

- everyone will be using modified pics and sounds.

- everyone will be using timers for every weapon, armor, powerup. One players timers will effect all his teammates, so only one player needs a timer for Quad

- Teamsay will be a thing of the past, nobody uses it anymore, instead they ALL use their personal vent server (or something similar) to communicate with their teammates.

- Logitech will come out with a all gamers input device,  cordless keyboard with macro functions built in, cordless mouse with no lag, on par with corded mouse and headphones that plug into the keyboard rather than into the computer. Mouse sensitivity will increase up to over 6000 dpi, allowing the player to make incredible precise shots.

- There will be a 3rd party addon, which uses the computer to help communicate with your teammates, such as, when picking up a weapon, armor, powerup. Instead of the player notifying their teammates, the computer will do the work, leaving the player to enjoy playing and not fiddling around with buttons. This will also communicate other things such as, if the player needs health or weapon, or if the enemy is low on health, also alerting teammates that mega /armor/weapon is available for them.

- Someone will invent a bot, that is mistaken for a regular player, people cannot distingish between real players and bots online, they do not act like bots but rather like humans. Even with a bit of ego.  One guy can run a whole clan of bots claiming them to be real and compete in the Q2 Leauge.

- Internet connection will evolve as well, allowing majority of the players to have lan like pings to a majority of the servers, and under sub par 50 pings to oversea servers.

- Someone will build a REAL LIFE replica of The Edge (q2dm1) primarly for paintball type battles. Including the lift and water.

- There will be a new player, very young, but incredibly skilled. He's not even a teenager but he's got the smart thinking, "1 step ahead of his enemies" style of Thresh along with the fast paced style of purri, and he will dominate.  People are confident his skills and styles are > than purri and thresh combined. This player will be Canadian.

So what DO You think will happen in 10-15 years, providing the Q2 scene is active as it is today.

I think these pretty much exist already.   It's called 'Eraser Bot'.  They talk shit and play pretty human like.  Only thing is it's for local servers only as far as I know.  I'd say that anyone with a good knowledge of programming could make something like what you say VERY easily, or have already.  The code is already out there for it, it's just puzzling it together.  You can tweek settings on something like frkq2 to completely hide any signs of auto-aim aswell.  For a newb, this may not be too much help for them.  But in the hands of an already skilled player, it would boost their 'skill' level enormously.

bunny hopping is really how you gain speed in quakeworld by using air accel.. it carried over to other games though.. so in q2 its just strafe jumping.

Right.  The speed of light is the limiting factor.  186,282 miles per second sounds fast until you start talking milliseconds.  A mere 186 miles travelled per millisecond... and that's just travelling one direction (ping measures round-trip time.)

Dallas, TX, to London, England is roughly 4900 miles, I think.  That would come out to 26 milliseconds one-way.  So the theoretical minimum ping would be something like 52ms?  That's actually faster than I expected... did I make a mistake?

Ah... but the speed of propagation of electrical charge through copper is a bit slower, 139711 miles/sec.  And, surprisingly to me, light through fiber is even slower: 121083 miles/sec.  (source: http://ispcolumn.isoc.org/2003-05/ethernet.html )

So apparently with current fiber technology, a straight link between Dallas and London could get around 81ms ping, tops.

Funky... well (assuming i've not made hideous mistakes with the numbers) it's nice to know there is some room for improvement.  The theoretical max. ping of 52ms between Dallas and London would be pretty sweet.  :)  But on the downside, it CAN'T EVER get faster than that, until somebody invents warp drive.  C =  :smiley_aarr:.

   As to cant ever get faster,  I dont buy that one bit.  I've seen the figures,  been explained limitations.
But like a belief in a higher power I have the belief that it is possible for something to travel faster than light.
Maybe not in a way thats gonna lower ping for a gamer in London playing in Dallas,  but the universe is far
too amazing to put limitations on what is possible.

a couple euro players were playing on the euroq2l server, which is east.tastyspleen.net, and if I recall correctly, I know one is in belgium and he was pinging mid 90's on the server. lucky him :)
