APRQ2: Where To Download?
« on: March 18, 2016, 12:35:50 AM »

> Does anyone know what the latest version of APRQ2 is and where to get it? I'd like to install it on a system that runs on Ubuntu. I managed to find one particular version of it, but I can't compile it, because it insists on using an obsolete version of XMMS that I can't seem to find anywhere online.

Don't know much about Linux systems, and then only really know about Q2Pro (my preferred Quake II Engine)    :-\

Perhaps something like these webbys help:

https://github.com/AndreyNazarov/q2pro/blob/master/INSTALL

http://www.usinglinux.org/games/q2pro.html

Good luck!    :exqueezeme:

@jdolan

Jay can answer specifically but most engines and DLL's are built as i386 (32-bit) binaries. There is no reason to build 64-bit versions because there is no advantage to it and more than likely it can actually be detrimental to the engine's performance. This is due to the fact that pointers will be 64-bits and carrying them around in an application that doesn't need a huge chunk of memory confers a bandwidth hit where a cache miss and memory accesses are concerned. Quake 2 doesn't warrant a 64-bit address space and expanding it to use more objects or entities to take advantage of that increased memory space will make it not-quake2.

All true! However, since most folks are running 64 bit hardware and operating systems these days, I do only bother with 64 bit Linux for my Quake2 builds. This is because my version is dynamically linked, and 64 bit users are more likely to have the 64 bit versions of libsdl, libcurl, etc.. installed. I'd hate to make someone install a full 32 bit runtime just to play Quake2.

That said, Creamy, you could always compile my AprQ2 port yourself to have a 32 bit working version. It's very easy to do. Hit me up on IRC if you'd like to give it a shot.

Your avatar and the term "slackware" reminds me of my high school days, haha! I used to be into the SubGenius stuff back then. Had countless blank tapes that I filled up recording episodes of the Hour of Slack off the Georgia Tech radio station, as well as the local show Bob's Slacktime Funhouse run by Rev Swoozie the Floozie and Rev Dr Nolan Voyd. I'm sure I still have a few in junk boxes in a closet around here. I know I still have my copy of the Book of the SubGenius. It's on a bookshelf with all my old guitar magazines and guitar tab books. Pulled it out a couple years back to have something to read while taking a shit. Good god, what a collection of poignant pointless weirdness. :D Me and a few friends actually made it up to New York back in Summer 1997 for the X-Day drill. Had a fucking BLAST! Really wanted to go THE X-Day campout the next year in 98 but couldn't find anyone to go with. And then after high school, I just kinda got so wrapped up in other shit that I forgot all about the Church of the SubGenius. Pretty crazy to see that it's still going strong after all these years. Ivan Stang looks like a fucking old fart now, haha!

I always thought the sub genius stuff was fun but I didnt even connect the fact that i used bob as an avatar and am running slackware :) Totally sub conscious  :D, i think.

Haha, awesome, lavaboy. And yea, my bins are from a Debian VM; I figured that's the biggest bang for my buck in terms of user base. Fedora, Gentoo and Slack people will likely have to compile from source.

Foc, you graduated in 97? I was class of 98.

No, I was supposed to be class of 98, but due to some disciplinary issues and several changes in my schooling situation, I didn't end up graduating until 2000. :dohdohdoh:

I kinda got my shit together from 98 to 2000 when I graduated from high school, but being that I was 20 at the time (merely 1 year away from 21 and legal drinking age), I went back to being a crazy psycho asshole and from day 1 college kinda ended up being more about getting wasted outta my mind than getting a degree.

I was on 56k dialup, so it sucked... until I got a ratbot, haha. But then nobody wanted to play me. Wasn't like you could hide it either. MPlayer had it to where if anybody typed "ratbot" in the game chat, anyone using one would automatically echo back, "Yes! I'm a R A T B O T!!!"

Hah, yea man. I was living at home senior year of high school in 97, so from Dec '97 - Sep '98, I was an HPB on 33.6kbps. Fall of '98, I went away to college, and had access to UMass' T1 and LAN. My roommate freshman and sophomore year was another Comp Sci major like me, and we played Q2 in our dorm room probably 30 hours a week. Ended up starting Clan RoGuE and Qmass.net.

*sigh* Those were the days.

I asked you why, and you only responded with "everyone's a sinner." That's less "freely admitting your faults" and more of a minimization of them. Just saying.
