This was back in February 06, but I just found it and I'm sure there are some people who haven't read it. Thresh is a Quake 2 legend and I've wondered if he ever plays anymore. I think it would be hard to completely quit something you were so good at.

The interview quotes purri and has Thresh's opinions on today's play styles. Its a pretty interesting read.

Interesting interview......obviously begs the question who would win in a 1 vs 1 between Thresh and Purri. I agree with Thresh on the bunny-hopping thing. I'm not a big fan of it either. I don't think the game was designed with that type of movement in mind. I think it was a side aberration of the game engine that was unintentional. In fact the first thing I did when I started multiplaying was replace the "huah huah" sound file with a soft thump sound to lessen the din of the super-strafers. I embedded it in the pak file so I wouldn't be deluged by that ridiculous sound coming from everywhere when I played. Naturally its a disadvantage cause you don't have the sound giveaway where your opponent is.
Anyway - if Thresh is up to it I think he should set up a challenge and practice like hell cause Purri is formidable and smart.
I'd pay to download the match.........

i totally disagree with thresh's opinions on the new style of play.. thresh would get demolished by the speed of some of the newschool players today like purri.

yeah of course elysium.. he'd probably still be #1 if he kept playing.. but he didn't and the style/skill he had back then wont match up against a great player today like he says it will

This is an old argument. I don't think it would take him long to catch up. He was the best during a time when WAY more people played Q2. Like Fatal1ty, he was a natural at fps's, dominating Doom, Quake 1 and Quake 2.

Personally I think its bs that he quit. Its like Tiger Woods saying "Um, I don't really feel like playing golf anymore." Fatal1ty has made hundreds of thousands of dollars playing video games. He has products, sponsorships, and prestige. Whats Thresh have? Xfire? Waste of god-given talent if you ask me.

As for purri, I can't deny he's unbelievable, but I always think back to those zyz demos, where zyz slowly and methodically beats the hell out of him 3 games in a row and makes it look easy.

My money would be on the "thinker". There are far too many instances in competitive history of those with the most innate skill being beaten by someone who actually just outsmarted them. Rope-a-dope, baby. Old Schooler would win.

yeah but who said purri isn't a "thinker"? just because he plays fast paced and aims like a bitch doesn't mean he doesn't think or play smart.. he knows when to attack and how to get inside the others head just as good as an "oldschool thinker" if not better.

Thresh says in the interview that the gaming has evolved in Q2, if he played today, he would be forced to evolve into a fast paced style that we see today, plus the thinking. He would be playing similar, but no rocket jumping to mega like we see in his old demos.

Being a thinker lets you stay one step ahead of your opponent, my bet is if Thresh were active today he would hand purri his ass back to him.

Well lucky for me i actually got to play against both purri and thresh. I do have to say if thresh picked up q2 right now purri would win, but there has been nobody who could adapt to a game like he could. He was unstoppable in his day and even out of his prime. Tell me someone who can rock the world at 3 games at once starcraft (i know he didn't make the finals, but still made cash) quake 2 and quake 1. I donno if many of u can remember, but the transfer to quake1 and 2 is a difficult one it isn't even close to the same physics and if u play one for more than an hour u totally fuck urself for the other, the fact he could prepare for 2 games and place first in both says a lot. Not taking anything away from good ol purri, but thresh was the best of his time, purri is the best of his time, but i believe thresh accomplished much more during his time and it was much more amazing than purri's. naym i know u follow the new schoolers and love this style of play, but when this style of play wasn't here no one could touch thresh, in q2 he sucked balls compared to his q1 game thats a fact. you all talk about thresh being this q2 player, maybe you all forget he was a d2/q1 player as well and champion. Q1 was his game of choice and his game of skill no one could come close to him at all in q1 he dominated. Now one other thing i want to mention. Thresh didn't start playing q2 for 1 year after it was out, then he actually started to play it a little 1 month later he was #1. that says a lot. i'm done rambling both impressive players but dennis in his time was the man, purri right now is #1 i just think thresh was more impressive overall. Who could beat who now is irrevalent, but i do bet you this if they had a best of 5 games of 5 games d2/q1/q2/q3/q4 i would put my money on thresh.
