About Server Protection
« on: February 20, 2016, 01:51:33 PM »
Hi everyone,

i just opened quake 2 servers to have some fun with turkish q2 community , servers located in Turkey due to high ping on europe. We are not a big community just a couple of people and I'm too newbie about how to handle server configs anyway i spend quite long time researching finally i've managed to install anticheat (from http://tastyspleen.net/~quake2/anticheat/   dll's from anticheat's website) but time to time cheaters visiting server with aimbot and it's so easy to understand they are using aimbot while spectating.
As i know it's not %100 impossible to prevent wallhack but is there anything i can do about aimbots? At least can i prevent some of them? I'm not expecting %100 secure server, any suggestions, tips, will be appreciated.  :ilysign:

I use Windows server and  q2pro dedicated 1504.0.0.0 (r1504~924ff39),  openTDM (revision 182) mod.

server adresses;

31.210.91.58:27910  FFA with Bots
31.210.91.58:27915  TDM

Hi 5himmy, as you mentioned, sometimes it is easy to spot a cheat especially when it's being used by players that obviously don't have a lot of playing experience or map knowledge. For example they have clumsy movement but incredible accuracy. If there is no doubt someone is using a cheat then you could force them to use anticheat (server command: addacrequirement ip/mask) or add a ban so they can no longer connect (without using 'proxy' workarounds...)  The old forum with anticheat info - http://old.r1ch.net/forum/index.php?board=9.0
However, some people are still scary good when it comes to this old game and unfortunately many unexperienced players won't hesitate to call them hax, even after just one suspicious looking rail shot. So most of the time it will probably be hard to know for sure if someone is actually using a cheat. What you could do is silently record demos of the players that you think are using some kind of cheat, or ask other people to record them if they suspect anything.
This forum has sub-boards for uploading suspicious demos of possible cheaters, so that more people can take a look at the demos and tell you what they think is going on before you decide to kick or ban the players in question.

:bigcry:    I've been away from QII for a few months - came off bike and broke 3 bones (both elbows)    :humm:  .

Been on TF2 - sniper, but nothing like QII.     :rocketleft:      :rocketright:

Came back and wow - had my a$$ well and truly kicked     :nana:    .  Went on SP QII Nightmare and practiced everything before coming back.  Crosshair being slightly out is also something that needs to be in set back into mental memory.  Some scary good people on, indeed   :ubershock:

No point in worrying about hackers - whatever you do, they'll still be hacking!      :raincloud:   What matters is that you're not a hacker and you are having fun...

Hey 5himmy. I can understand your frustration, I run the Packetflinger servers and know first hand how hard preventing cheaters has gotten.

Unfortunately anticheat is not quite as useful as it once was. By forcing anticheat (ac=2) you're basically limiting your community to only using windows 7 and below. It doesn't work with windows 8 (afaik) and just having anticheat.dll in your q2 folder will cause a client crash on windows 10. And that also means no linux or mac clients either. Since you have a small community, maybe that doesn't matter though...

So you're basically limited to using q2admin for the old aimbots and banning obvious cheaters by hand.

And now, as usual, we finally get to this pathetic buffoon, once again, pettily grasping at straws for any desperate tiny false 'victory' it genuinely believes it can win.

"I freely admit to my faults but this degenerate can't even recognise his nevermind admit them."

I asked you why, and you only responded with "everyone's a sinner." That's less "freely admitting your faults" and more of a minimization of them. Just saying.

I forget, maybe you can help me out... Which one of us is banned from Tastyspleen discord again? And why?
