Daikatana - The 'younger cousin' of the Quake2!
« on: August 31, 2015, 06:24:41 PM »
I would say this was a great game, even though everyone speaks worst of it. Since I am a guy who like to SEE IT to believe it, I did it and I learned that we should not go by the opinions of others without knowing it before.  John Romero did a good job, after all, he is God!  8)

Even with a single-player with many annoying defects like bad AI bots(sidekicks), multiplayer it was excellent as far as the Quake2. The bad thing is that Daikatana not have a sniper weapon like a railgun.

Just do not quite understand why nowadays there are many servers around the world. And I realized that there is very little documentation about the game, as an explanatory complete list of client and server commands, and only one custom mod created for it(Rocket Arena). I am having trouble facing the error "loading plaque out time"(despite having the unnoficial version 1.3) that I suffer on some servers and can not find a solution.

What do you have to say about it, friends? Would not it be nice if tastyspleen host at least a single "FFA server" for Daikatana?  :righteous:

Hi there.  I remember this (just about) on my Gameboy (a handheld device that was rubbish) along with Zelda   :nana:  It was a port from one of the consoles (which I didn't have as I've always used a PC).  Never knew it made it to PC   :humm:
Checked on the World Wide Wait and yes, it did make it to PC.  I've also checked on Steam:
http://store.steampowered.com/app/242980/
Looks more like Unreal Engine to me, but will download it and see what it's like      It'll work on Windows without me going though DOSBOX, which is good   :headbang:  Doubt it will be anywhere near as good as QII - might be fun to have a 'day / night' where we can play a bit of multiplayer Daikatana, but not really sure   :eyecrazy:

The multiplayer looks pretty interesting from those videos although prox mines still in seems a bit lame.

For singleplayer, I thought the game wasn't too bad expect the parts where you are forced to play with AI. Oh yeah, and the game just randomly crashing, although I think that might be from just one of the patches.

Daikatana never need to run with DOSBox because it is a game of 2000. You just need the unnoficial 1.3 version of the patch that modernizes the executable for OS today. I mean, I never tried to play in servers today without this patch, but it is obvious that an update(even if not 1.3) is required to play online, like the the official v1.2.

Still to this day not explored it the single-player deep, but multiplayer I played and I can say it was a good experience, it was fun and exceeded my expectations. The multiplayer, briefly, is how ... like in Quake 1, Daikatana has 4 different worlds (present, mythological, medieval and futuristic), and each world there are different versions of the same six weapons (one of them is always melee). And there are only two types of armor, which are also different in each world. There are 4 items powerups: Goldensoul("Mega Health" like), Megashield(super armor), Mana Skull(invulnerability) and Wraith Orb(invisibility). There are 4 game types: Deathmatch(and Team Deathmatch), Deathtag, CTF and cooperative. The Skills Powerups that I did not understand very well, so I will not go into details, lol. As in Q2, there are three types of model players, but each has different handling characteristics among themselves. Hiro jumps higher, Mikiko runs faster and Superfly is more resistant.
But I have some criticisms of it as the lack of brightskins(the default skins are somewhat difficult to see) and armors's pickups sounds, which are almost as too low as the standard quake2, are difficult to hear, not like in quake3, for example. I think one custom pak that has brightskins as the Elysium made for q2 and changed sounds for armor pickups would be enough to further improve the multiplayer.
In my PC, the program "PackSpace HU" does not work well for Daikatana, despite what it says that "Daikatana Paks" files is supported.

But my biggest problem I face is that DAMN error called "Loading plaque out time", which they say is a original game bug. A friend of mine tried to run an online server so I try to get in and I could not. The same error I faced in some other USA's servers, but the admin Mara'kate's servers are OK!! He gave me the linux server files upgraded these days ago, I went to my friend, he went up the server and still I face the damn same such problems. I concluded that perhaps its must be some of the server configuration error, I thought to ask for admin pass me the config of his server but he's a hard man to find online. Fortunate that it has its own website and there have available e-mail his personal contact(see below).
