I think the story mentioned that preliminary results from testing indicated high pH levels, meaning it's an acidic substance. So... nah, it's a lot more than rust stained water coming out of there. More likely it's an abundant surplus of hydrochloric acid that was dumped and left. Usually in hydraulic fracturing they'll use lots of different things to make the process "safer" and more environmentally friendly,... which doesn't really help that much. Things like different anti-biological agents to kill bacteria that consumes certain parts of the slurry to produce toxic chemicals, other corrosion inhibitors that further prevent biological materials from producing corrosive by-products, pH adjusting chemicals that reduce acidity and also inhibits these nasty biological processes, as well as.... certain types of glycol acids that prevent metal oxidation... and thus SHOULD prevent massive amounts of rust colored water from gushing out of the ground. Apparently that shit isn't in whatever this stuff is.

That's why I said take a wild guess as to what that orange shit is. A wild guess is all you can really make. Rust? Maybe. But maybe not. Could be any number of a host of things. But if it IS rust, then apparently someone didn't treat this substance properly and chances are excellent that there's a whole lot more than just rust in that stuff. Chances are excellent that there's some deadly bacteria prevalent in enormously high concentrations. If I lived anywhere near there, I'd be packing my shit and moving.

I quoted the story incorrectly.

It didn't say high or low, just "unsafe", which I can only imagine would mean it's highly acidic. What else would it be? That's what fracking does. It liquifies parts of the rock/whatever with acid to allow the other substances to flow into the cavities and break them apart with pressure. And it's a pretty old and abandoned mine, think the story said they stopped mining there sometime between 1940 and 1960. This was before the EPA was around to tell them they had to make the process safer. So all the other chemicals they SHOULD'VE been using to counteract any catastrophe weren't being used. All this shit has sat in the ground for 50 years with no efforts to clean it or correct it. It just sat there, waiting... and it finally rained enough to overflow and the holes just puked it back up. This is why all the tree-huggers are vehemently opposed to the practice. It's purposely pumping volatile toxic waste into the ground in order to mine for profit. Not much different than all those movies (like Men At Work with Charlie Sheen and Emilio Estevez, lol) where the evil evil bad guy dumps barrels of radioactive toxic waste into the ocean which will eventually leak but he's so damned evil and greedy that he doesn't care about the environment, mwahahaha! Only this shit ain't no movie. People fucking die in large numbers when this stuff reaches the drinking water. It happened someplace in Kentucky or Pennsylvania, I forget the particulars.

I don't think that's correct but my last chemistry class was in 1976. I suppose if "something or another" contained

Iron sulfide is FeS, it can react with hydrochloric acid (HCl) to produce hydrogen sulfide (H2S) thus: FeS + 2 HCl → FeCl2 + H2S
This is the gas that's responsible for the "rotten egg smell" in geysers and hot springs. That orange color reminds me of those.

Sulfuric acid is H2SO4 so you'd need some heat and a source of oxygen to bind the extra oxygen to the hydrogen sulfide.

Apparently a result of oxidation of iron is what results in this.


As far as Ebola goes, I'm not too worried about it.  This is the new thing for the media to go crazy about and cause public panic.  In the 80s, it was AIDS.  It was predicted that AIDS would overtake the U.S. and everyone would end up dying from it.  Because of education on the issue, the overall infection rate in the U.S. has stayed well below 1% of the population, and has actually declined in recent years because of ongoing education on the topic.

The point is that the media will scare you silly if you let it.  This will be a controllable disease just like all the rest.  It actually is very hard to catch Ebola.

My heart goes out to the nurses who contracted it, though.  Talk about serious symptoms.  Ebola is no joke.  It knocks you the fuck out.  Even while recovering from it and with viral load dropping off, it leaves you so weakened that you are usually bedridden for weeks afterward.  You have moments of clarity and strength nestled within days-on-end fatigue and lethargy.

The response of the health care community in the U.S. is the correct one in fighting the disease.  The response from the media, however, is as usual overblown and doing far more harm than good in this situation.
