What keyboard should I get?

Currently looking at a Ducky board (this would be my first mechanical) or a Steel Series Apex.  I currently have a Razer Lycosa that I think is about to crap out.

I've heard good things about the Steelseries Apex from streamers on twitch who spend hours upon hours playing.

I use a Razer blackwidow ultimate 2013 mechanical KB and I would recommend it as well.

As long as you're OK with the super loud clacking of the keys they are really quite nice.

Jesus Christ, are "mechanical" keyboards supposed to be the hi-tech thing now? I'm almost afraid to ask derv what he paid for a Razer brand keyboard. I mean sure, most computers these days are gonna come with one of those shitty slimline keyboards, but for the life of me I can't understand how companies could get away with upping the price on mechanical keyboards like I'm sure Razer does, especially considering they've been out and widely used since the fuckin' 80's when people started buying home computers.

What kind of a nutty fucking world do we live in where these people can get away with selling us one thing that works, then selling us something else that kinda works (for a little while until it breaks) and becomes the standard, and then they turn around and jack up the price on the old thing as if it's cutting edge just because its not as big of a piece of shit as the new thing? Fuck that shit. Maybe when ONE god damn keyboard manufacturer can design flip-out tabs on the rear underside of a board that WON'T break if you pound on the top of the keys once or twice, maybe then and only then will I consider paying more than 10 bucks for a fuckin' keyboard. Kiss my irish ass, thank you.

if Im not mistaken, mech keyboard has a longer life since the keys uses switches (similar to that of a mouse) unlike the pad type which uses conductive rubber as switches.

Pad kb has a lot of advantages like softer to type, silent, lighter and cheaper.

Some gamers say that using a mech kb is better if your playing games. I do see the point.

I refused to buy mine myself even though I wanted it. Got it for christmas in lieu of a bunch of other stuff.

It's prolly in the $120-130 range. Compared to the 30 dollar KB I was using before, it is night and day, but I still wouldn't want to shell out 100+ myself. The feel is drastically different and it does pick up every button push, no ghosting etc, but the damn thing cost nearly as much as my vid card.

If you play games professionally with lots of key binds and such the extra programmable buttons are probably worth it, otherwise most people don't need em. I still use a 3 button MS optical mouse so it's not like I can't live without more buttons

The most worthwhile difference I notice is the quality of the construction. The cabling is really durable, it has a USB passthrough on it that doesn't feel wiggly or like it's going to rip out, and it sits heavy on the desk and nothing about it gives you that "gonna break with use" feel that most plastic stuff has.

I've got a stack of 3 or 4 keyboards sitting in a drawer, all of them have one or both feet broken off. I've just gotten used to typing on a flat keyboard.

120 dollars.... that's insane. It's the same shit with mice though. A cheap 15-20 dollar corded laser mouse used to be pretty common. Now no one except the "gaming mouse" companies make them anymore and they charge you 80 bucks or more for them.

I suppose that's what capitalism has become, and it's a good racket if you're in on the take, but the rest of us are eating shit.

I found a solution to the breaking feet issue due to one of my shipping guys a few weeks back.

I cut a pair of 1" long (just longer than the feet) pieces of heavy duty automotive rubber hose that's like 3/4" ID or so and jammed them over the legs on his keyboard so they act as shock absorbers. Now he can hamfist it all day and it doesn't budge on the desk or break the little plastic bits off.

Remember all those movies where kids were sitting at the dinner table, a fork in one hand, a butter knife in the other, just banging away on the table shouting, "I WANNA EAT! I WANNA EAT!" Well that's what I sometimes do to my keyboard.

See, if people in the manufacturing industry cared about the durability of products, they'd make those tabs outta spring steel with rubber tips so they won't scratch a desk. It's like,... Come on, people, do I have to think of EVERYTHING!?!

ive had mine for years and it still works fine. If it was to ever break I would get the same one.
