DM Server Spectator Limit

Every single time I try to go spectator lately I cannot get in because someone is sitting in the single spec slot.
I've been there for many maps in a row, on multiple occasions and seen this happen where one aliased guy (who responds immediately ofc) is just idling in spectator the whole time and never joins the game to play a single map.

It's annoying, and since we aren't supporting or recommending anticheat anymore there is no other way to check people who don't look legit.

All it requires is one cheater to sit a second client in there and nobody can make a demo.

If the server won't allow you to switch to spectator mode, just join a different server, hop into spec mode, then rejoin the server where you want to spectate. If you join any server with spectator already set to 1, it doesn't matter what the spectator limit is.

Strange, the server reports: "maxspectators" is "4"

(Although really "3" considering WallFly's omnipresence.)

It's bumped to "8" now.

is it possible that the server caches spectators so even if that person leaves the server the number of spectators will still be the same?

This isn't so much a problem with the spectator limit as it is with the overall 16 player limit on the server and one person in particular...

For the past several days now, I've seen him sitting in spectator ALL DAY LONG, never playing, never disconnecting. In the evenings, DM gets kinda busy and often hits the player limit. If he's just gonna stay connected using his game as a poor man's screensaver while he's away for hours at a time rather than present and playing, then he needs to get booted the fuck off to make room for other people. Last night, I wanted to hop on and play, but I couldn't because HE was there not being there.

i dont play DM often, but it would be fun to join in on DM with 20-30+ players it would probably happen sometimes as the server hits max capacity pretty often it seems like.

Eeek. I'm gonna have to disagree on that one there, bud. The limit is 16 at the moment, and believe me, once it begins approaching that mark, it often becomes frustrating because you'll get fragged 5 times in a row within 2 seconds of spawning before you can even THINK about finding a weapon to fight back. It's especially bad on q2dm2.

Hm. Yes, the times during the week when I try to join DM and the server is full, there are often around 3 players who will have gone a whole map without getting a frag (and so I presume they are idle; kinda hard to get no frags at all on a crowded FFA server?)

At which point, after monitoring the server status for a few minutes, I'll manually disconnect players who appear to be idle.

It would indeed seem beneficial to have a more automated approach to this.

The r1q2 server has an "sv_idlekick" setting, which I'd be willing to try out, except there's currently no way to prevent it from kicking WallFly.

Well it's the same couple of people who constantly do this. A condump from a little bit ago.

Both names in red often idle in spec mode for many hours to DAYS at a time.

There is also some numbered guy with 200 ping who is always in spec there. lol.

Ipipiscratcho seems to be another extended-spectating offender (my guess is to avoid being unable to connect when the servers are full). You can kinda see if they're actually spectating too by typing "players" in the console. It will show them having the same score as the player they're spectating. If their score is zero, and remains that way, it's likely they're spectating someone that is dead on a spawn pad (afk). Doesn't always work I suppose, but fairly reliable it seems.

is it possible to add the option to see all players on the server when tapping F1 or Tab or wherever you have your player list key bound to?
