old school quake2 needs help
« on: May 07, 2014, 08:34:26 PM »
Hi guys I'm new to the forum.

I have my old rig up and running and wanted to play some quake2 for old times sake.

I have an AMD Athlon 4000+ 64 bit
4 gb of ddr3 ram
geforce 7800GT
windows7 64 bit
dell u2410 monitor with 1920x1200 res.

I can't seem to get Quake2 running smooth. I can't do all the jumps I used to probably because of settings.

few questions:
1. what version of q2 should I be running. q2pro, r1q2 or something else? (what's the best or most popular?)
2. what in game resolution would be best for performance? (so I can do all the jumps etc)
3. can anyone hook me up with a good to cfg as a starting point?

I don't have time to mess with every setting to figure it out myself like when I was a teenager.

I played back when PGL was all the rage and ten.net was the place to play :)

Thanks in advance guys. Until I get this setup right I'll be fragging newbs on quake-live.

its prolly the multithreading that is your problem.

edit. wait it isnt a dual core right? not an x2.

if it isnt, you can try r1q2. also tweak the fps if im not mistaken.

To elaborate: If your system is multi-core, definitely disable "threaded optimizations" in the NVidia control panel for Quake2, as it makes the game stutter badly.

If your system is single-core I'd turn off that setting anyway for good measure, just to rule it out.

As far as various Q2 clients, Elysium has put together some helpful installers for both q2pro and r1q2:

There is no way u could play smoth in 1920x1200 resolution with 4000+ and 7800GT
start your quake and do timerefresh to check fps then start lowering your resolution until u find optimum fps
