Super Bowl and Snow.....play or...
« on: January 23, 2014, 08:21:54 PM »
So what should you do if you're the NFL and a snowstorm is predicted for Super Bowl Sunday?  I say play the game!  I think it would make it more interesting.  I've always felt football should be played outdoors, on real grass when possible.  You play BASKETBALL inside!

I never remember a game canceled because of snow, so they shouldn't.

But, I'm betting it will effect ticket sales, merchandising, food sales, etc.  If it gets really cold watching the game is no fun.

I've heard rumblings of them rescheduling the game..I just don't see how that is logistically possible...

If it gets really cold watching the game is no fun.

You better believe those people who paid several grand per ticket to be in the front row will be there, regardless of the weather.  It's a 99.9999999% probability it will go forward as scheduled.  I seriously doubt they'd cancel the biggest game of the year in the biggest sport in the U.S. over any weather condition.

Hell, I don't even watch football nor really give a shit about it but I'm dead sure they will make those motherfuckers get out on that field and play even if they get frostbite within 10 minutes.  Fuck 'em.  It's the Superbowl.

edit:  I just checked the weather for there.  It's going to be around 20 F with tapering off snow showers.  You gotta be kidding me; that ain't shit.  It's colder here right now than it will be there on Sunday.  zzzzz

I thought it was a dumb idea when they decided to play the SB in a northern outdoor venue.
Once you make that decision you need to follow through.  They knew the possible issues when they made the decision, now they just have to deal with it.
I'm sure a lot of people are paying big money for the airline tickets and hotels to be there on the set date, if you change it this late you are going to screw over a bunch of fans.

I would love to see this matchup in perfect conditions, but it is what it is.  :raincloud:

Oh I have no doubt people will be there, but I've been to Bills games in 10 degree weather, I've seen the stadium on TV, read the news about it: if it's cold/windy/etc. then lots of people don't show and people start to leave way before the game ends, especially if it's a lopsided game.

So the NFL better hope it's a couple point different the entire game!

They picked New Meadowlands stadium location because it's a newer stadium, was finished and open for business maybe a year or two ago. They tend to hit the newest venues for superbowls. I remember Superbowl XXVIII (I think it was) came to Atlanta back when the Georgia Dome was brand new. And that wasn't all that long ago. 1994 I think it was. That was barely 20 years ago, and the Falcons are already trying to get a new stadium built. Even though it IS completely retarded to tear down a gigantic expensive stadium, I don't guess I'd completely mind teams building new stadiums every 15 or 20 years, because:
It generates lots of local construction jobs, it will probably increase seating capacity and ticket sales, NEW SHIT attracts more businesses and patrons and stimulates the local economy.

HOWEVER...

Local taxpayers foot a good portion of the bill, or at least they WILL here in Atlanta. In order for the Falcons to build a new stadium, they gotta collect a city tax to help pay for it. This boggles my mind how stupid people can be to vote in support of such corrupt idiocy. NFL teams are basically privately owned businesses. They make the argument that because of their presence, they create so much OTHER business in the area that they deserve some compensation for that in the form of taxpayers helping cover the cost of rebuilding and/or renovating. Yet NFL teams are all privately owned and operated businesses using tax money as though they are government institutions.

Anyway. ::)

I don't see that weather will really be a factor in the game. I know that a few years ago, a few NFL games actually DID get postponed due to weather. One that really comes to mind was when snow collapsed the roof at the Vikings stadium a few years back. At the same time, several other northeastern US stadiums got hit with shitloads of snow and ice. I think one or two games might've had to be rescheduled, but I think the Vikings game just got moved to another local college football stadium.

Boggles my mind too.  The Bills are having having a major renovation to Ralph Wilson Stadium done (millions, maybe hundreds) but are also talking about moving the stadium TO Buffalo (It's about 30 minutes south of the city, in a nice area with LOTS of parking).  The biggest issue with a move to the city is they want to put it near the waterfront, but there is NO parking.  During a Sabres game the city's in near gridlock for hours and they hold less then 1/2 a planned Bills stadium does.  Most of the $$ is on the taxpayer dime.  It would be like EA saying they want Buffalo to fund a billion dollar building to house game development and the extra side business they benefit off of them will help the economy...  of course it's nuts, but people like sports and are willing to near bankrupt their communities to fund them!

It is truly amazing what sports fans will do/put up with for the love of their game.

BTW, at least Jerry Jones is one smart asshole.  He built the new Cowboys stadium with a retractable roof, so if the weather shits all over itself (like it did Superbowl week here in Dallas), it wouldn't matter.  Must've sucked for some fans though.  Giant slates of ice hundreds of feet long fell off the stadium rooftop and nearly fell on a bunch of people.  GG Dallas.

I dunno, he spent an awful lot of money that he didn't have to making that stadium so opulent. From what I understood, local taxes weren't going to cover all that much of the cost, so almost all of it came out-of-pocket. It's gonna be quite a while before he recovers what he put into it. I don't know that he'll even live long enough to see it happen.
