Not bad at all. I'm running a 3.4ghz, although mine came with 12gb ram. 12 is kinda overkill, but should prevent me from ever having to install any more before this entire machine is completely obsolete.

Your disk space is a bit low at only 500gb. Might wanna look into spending a little more to get at least 1TB, preferably MORE than 1TB though. If you plan on keeping a bunch of music and video stored, you're gonna need plenty of space. Decent quality movies are gonna take up 1.4g each. If you go collecting tons of music like I have, each album on MP3 at 320khz quality are gonna take up anywhere from 80-180mb per album depending on the play time, and if you want outstanding true CD quality lossless FLAC files, it's gonna run even higher per album, probably 300-600mb per album. Then if you're gonna keep a bunch of games and other software loaded, that's gonna take up some room. Keep in mind that most of the games out these days are gonna be taking up at least 15gb each. That doesn't sound like much, but after a year of downloading lots of shit, eventually you're gonna start running out of room.

Case in point, I've got 1.33TB on this machine. I've had it about 2 years. Granted I download and save a TON of movies and tv shows. Right now I've got about 320gb of unused disk space. In other words, in less than 2 years I've managed to fill up more than 3/4ths of the drive space.

in terms of specs that rig is pretty decent for that price.

I just bought a similar spec'd asus whitebox for a work comp with a bit more ram for about the same $ and that only had onboard video.
The gt630 isn't anything amazing but it will do the deed on stuff made up to a few years ago and it's worth about a 100 by itself. It's the lower end of the 600 series in terms of clock speeds, but they're still better than a lot of stuff.

If you have lots of data you want to store, don't just put in a big drive in that box and put your OS and all that together. that's a recipe for failure.

Leave that 500gb drive as the OS and programs drive and get a small NAS (with a raid if you can afford it) and put your documents, videos , music on that. Makes one easy location from which to do a backup and it's fast and accessible to multiple computers all the time. I store all my movies and music on a 2TB one and I can get to it via web browser or map the drive to all the computers in the house. If I set it up using the software it comes with I can make it a personal cloud storage accessible from outside too.

Something like that would work on the cheaper end. If you want a raid NAS, it starts to cost like 350 and more, but you gain the security of not losing your shit every time one drive dies. (this seems to happen to you often so it may be worth it)

Do you even know what FLAC is? It's "lossless audio", basically the same quality that you'd get on CD. 320k mp3's are pretty good and usually the highest quality you can find in mp3 copies of things, but still not as good as original CD quality. Most of where you're gonna hear the difference is in the higher frequencies especially at louder volumes through better speakers. The extreme top end of cymbals and vocals will have that weird electronic jingly-crackle.

Should run great. Don't really need anything more than an i3 these days for the most part.

Easy upgrade recommendations down the road...8-16 GB ram and an SSD drive. If you wait for good deals, you can probably do both for under $200....maybe even under $150.

these days the top end amd and nvidia cards are about even, but it will depend on the games you play sometimes favoring one over the other for better performance.

I go intel/nvidia on everything but it's matter of personal preference more than performance.

On the nvidia vid cards, the second numbers tend to be indicative of clock speeds so a well made 250 might outperform a 430 in terms of sheer speed. The number of SPU's (cuda cores) and the Texture address units are also very important.

Going from a pretty solid 200 series card I stepped up to the 600 series and I saw pretty impressive gains in some areas and no change or worse in others because I didn't get a top of the line 600 series card.

The comparisons above show how the higher end 200 series card actually spanks a midrange 600 series.
They both run about 115 dollars right now, but I'd buy the 280 instead of a 650.


I bought a 650gt based on it's cheap price, but all told I should have bought the 680 or better to see increases across the board.

A difference in the first number can mean a lot or a little, a difference on the second number can mean a huge performance increase, but there are a variety of factors and it all comes down to what you're using it for.

I'm on a Radeon video card. I wish it were an Nvidia GeFucker. It performs decent I guess, but it lacks the control panel program than Nvidia cards have to control things like antialiasing and other option on a per program basis. Sometimes games don't really have options to allow you to control that shit, and the Nvidia control panel came in handy because sometimes it could help improve performance.

With this AMD hunk of shit, all you get is a control panel that does all the same shit that windows does already. THANKS FOR NOTHING, ASSHOLES!

ram is about bare minimum honestly :/ thats probably the most painful looking part of the specs, 500GB disk space is fine if you don't need more, plus a HD is a really easy upgrade... power supply looking lacking at 450 watts too, but honestly should be fine unless you plan to upgrade to a nice video card, and I might just not like that number because I'm used to never throwing anything under a 750 in my machines for quite a few years due to higher performance parts

as far as amd vs nvidia:

for linux, just stuck with nvidia... amd drivers are taking great strides, but still just aren't quite on par nvidia actually releases closed source drivers you can get from their site to install though

for windows, they are both good with support, but nvidia drivers tend to be much higher quality the same as you see on linux

for gpu computing, amd wins hands down the larger amount of stream processors allows you to have more parallel threads of data computing at once, and makes larges batches of programs specifically designed to run on graphics cards to go faster... though the performance of cuda through nvidia cards is nothing to shake a stick at, the numbers definitely favor amd here

for gaming performance they are equal, with nvidia having the gimmick of physx
