P2 333, viper v33 video, 14 inch CRT, we had cable Internet back in 98 :)

I wasn't impressed with q2 at first and continued playing q1 until 2003.

Old school alert!

Late 1998:  p1 133, 16 Mb RAM, 1 Mb video card, 768 Mb HDD, 17" CRT monitor (using the same one now - LOL), cable internet since '98.  ;>

Actually that computer died not long after I first started fucking with q2, so I bought my l33t computer at the time, which was still a piece of shit.  Had a Celeron 433, 16 Mb voodoo3 3000, 64 Mb RAM, etc...still barely pumped out above 40 fps steady on any map in all of q2.  At least I had cable internet so porn was always a fast download.  ha

I actually had the SAME exact setup, mine was a Compaq straight from Best Buy.  But I was on 28.8k connecting to wonderful AOL til around 03ish-04ish when I started working after school doing landscaping in High School and paid for my own cable since my momma always made me learn responsibility all the time, if I wanted it, I had to find a way to pay for it hah.  Around that time was when I spent around 1k to build my first custom PC and it was like walking through a black hole, just the difference.  I played EQ(Everquest, basically WoW but better and came out much earlier) since beta in like 98ish til a year after I built my computer and the difference was crazy.  To 'zone' from one place to a different place in EQ, it took anywhere from 13(MINIMUM)-30 mins to completely load a zone and be able to move around.  Needless to say, I LD'd a LOT zoning and I would have to completely shut my computer down, reconnect to AOL(and HOPE I got a GOOD connection, which was rare), completely reload the game back to where I could play(which took bare minimum of 25-30 mins) and hope I didn't go LD at any point during that time or have someone train the zone line with a bunch of mobs and I die while loading then have to wait ANOTHER 15ish mins to respawn.  That shit took dedication, haha.  Q2 was almost as bad, since my ping was always 300+, anyone chaining or using HB would make me lockup 9/10 times hah.  That's why it was kinda nice that OGL RA2 had a HPB bracket that lasted til the time I built my computer(that's actually the reason I built it, so I could join my team going strictly LPB after the removal of HPB on OGL, ha).  Good ole -aM- and [vG]: .  Can't remember the specs to a T but I know the second one was a P4 3.2 ghz? with 1gb of ram, ATI Radeon 300?,  sound blaster live! sound card and some 10 dollar optical mouse and 10 dollar keyboard with like 30-40 dollar speakers.  Oh, how times have changed.

It was the first computer that was barely worthy that we owned.  Wouldn't run a damn thing really, though, since it was purchased in 1995 when Win95 was out, and was good for almost nothing.  It did do one thing for sure though...it spurred the desire for more.  :>

BTW, it was an Acer Aspire, I believe.  Also bought from good ole Best Buy.   :D

edit:  What really amazes me is that this CRT monitor has lasted me this long.  This thing is strong as an ox, just fucking refuses to die.  Every computer seems to kick the bucket about every 5-6 years.  When this monitor will, who knows...    :)

P166, 32MB, 1MB Diamond S3 ViRGE, 33.6Kbps dial-up. That was in December of 1997. In spring 1998 I bought my first proper 3D accelerator: a 4MB Hercules Thriller 3D (Rendition Verite 2200 chip). That card got a steady 24-30fps at 640x480 in that P166 setup, which was pretty darn good for an integrated 2D / 3D card in those days.

Roughly 3 times the horsepower Quake2 was spec'ed for. I'm not sure why you're complaining.

Had a Pentium 90MHz, 32MB RAM and some really shoddy generic gfx card. I remember coming across the Q2 demo on a CD from some magazine. Damn thing only ran at a few FPS but it was the first time I experienced any game like it, so it was all good fun back then...
