mouse spins

I get the crazy mouse spins every 5 mins or so. How can I fix this? I'm using a usb mouse and have "enchance pointer precision" on if that makes any difference.

If that's something through windows, then turn it off. Download the driver for your mouse and the utility to control the functions and settings(an average mouse nowadays has a driver/utility..i.e. any logitech).. make sure accel is off and if there's an option to override any windows settings, do that. If it's a laser mouse, put your dpi at around 700-1000 in general but to your liking.

It can also come down to something as simple as what you're using for your 'mouse pad', if anything at all.  I may end up deleting this post on your reply if it doesn't apply to you, but using a dark mouse pad is what fixed this for me.  Was just using my wooden table's surface at one point and my mouse would freak out every now and then and hasn't since I bought a black gaming mouse pad a couple years back.

I doubt its the mouse pad because I recently got a new one (all red, soft) and its still doing it. I'm gonna turn off the windows enhanced pointer precision feature and see what happens. Just downloaded the Logitech mouse driver as well. To be continued.

and, you probably know this, but make sure m_accel or whatever is set to 0 in your settings..Assuming you have a logitech mouse, the logitech utility is setpoint or something, load that up and turn mouse accel off in the "game mode" part or whatever it says as well.

I use r1q2 and there's no m_accel command but whatever it sure feels like "0". BTW what does the directinput mouse setting do? I have that disabled. Either way I think turning off the enhanced pointer precision feature in windows did the trick. Thanks for the tips.

ya know whats a stupid fix with a lot of optical mice...

check and make sure there are no hairs inside the optical sensor have had that shit drive me NUTS in the past, and it turns out my cat slept on my mousepad and the hair was getting in the way of the laser causing ghost movements lol

just putting it out there, worth checking

Don't even need a cat for a hair to mess with the mouse.  That's almost always been my mouse issue.

Refer to my post to fix it then friar, unless you have a sub-par mouse that doesn't have a downloadable driver. If so, ya gotta live with it as you're used to.

I've had this same problem in the past. It happens from time to time when you use an optical mouse on any semi-reflective surface. It's like a feedback loop caused when light is redirected back into the sensor at just the right frequency or when it doesn't have a proper surface to track from. Usually, it happens when people use their mouse on a naked desktop like some type of laminated wood. But occasionally it can happen on a newer mousepad with fibers that don't completely absorb the light emitted from the sensor. The color of your mousepad "could" be the problem. The light is red, the mousepad is red... sounds like the most likely explanation to me. So maybe try a different color mousepad, something that isn't red and has a smooth cottony-type fabric surface rather than some fancy looking semi-gloss polyester fabric surface like some of them have.

It's been my experience that laser sensor mouses are better than optical ones anyway. The laser mouse I used to have had a completely invisible laser for the sensor rather than a red one. When I was having problems with the red optical mouse spinning out of control when using it on my laminated desktop, I could plug in the laser mouse and it would NEVER spin. Also, the laser mouse seemed to be more accurate. I don't know what the native polling rate for it was, but it must've been higher than any of the optical ones I've ever used because I can't seem to follow targets as well anymore and my snap shots rarely ever land where I want them to.

As far as the "enhance pointer precision" ticker setting in windows mouse properties, that effectively IS the Windows mouse acceleration setting. The faster you move the mouse, the faster the pointer will travel across the screen. But keeping it on can make smaller movements a little more accurate, which might come in handy if you're using a graphical program to draw/edit anything freehand with a mouse. But on the whole, it's not very useful for anything other than normal everyday browsing around your PC folders and your internet browser type of stuff. Might as well leave it off, because you probably won't be able to tell the difference anyway as long as your pointer speed is set properly. Personally, I don't use it. If you decide to leave it ON though, Q2 clients like R1Q2 etc usually have a setting to disable the mouse acceleration, so no problem.

He hinted at having a logitech mouse, which has driver capabilities, so he should just do what I said. If not, either live with it or get a new mouse, yes.

Ok, as it turns out it wasn't the windows enhanced pointer precision that caused this. For the record my last mouse pad was purple, black and blue and I still had this problem. Gonna try cleaning it now. Switching mice would be my next move.

Go with a laser mouse. Guarantee you won't have that problem again.
