help with r1gl ( lags and low fps )

Hi,

i wanted to play q2 again and i installed r1q2 but i got a problem with R1GL :

-Every time i fire with any weapon, i get a huge lag ( my fps go so low and i get spikes on my net-graph ) and this lag ends when the rocket explodes or when the bullet reach it's destination ( if that makes sens )

Everything works great except for that lag which makes the game unplayable for me, obviously

i use a HP Pavilion g6 laptop ( got an Integrated intel HD Graphic Card and an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 6470m, take note that the pc uses the intel one and the latest drivers for the ATI gfx are installed but somehow, it doesn't seem to work,  )

any help ?

Check your sound drivers and update

Had a vid issue before that ended up being related to the sound

On integrated cards that don't have dedicated video memory it helps to disable dynamic lighting -> gl_dynamic 0

also, i got an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 6470m in this laptop but somehow it doesn't work, Catalyst control center tells me that there is no "ATI" video card ( CC used to work but when i changed the GFX used in this laptop via bios it stopped after like two days, the ATI card worked great and i get all the games working with max settings with no-problem ) now i got back to 2011's drivers and everytime i try to install some new drivers, it just do not detect my gfx.

I'm not sure what to do. I have the same problem and I have a Radeon 6560 HD, I believe. Whenever I try using R1GL and players shoot weapons that display particles on the screen, I get frame drops. The frame drop are huge on maps with higher r_poly counts like q2next1, koldduel1 and bloodrun, for me.

I've always had this issue with this graphics card since I got it, so keeping it up to date is not an issue, and I really haven't thought of a solution to this problem, either. So I just play with vid_ref gl so I don't get those frame drops.

@Barton "gl_ext_pointparameters is ignored on ATI cards unless set to 2"

Helped when i was "forced" to play on ATI card

EDIT: even if its looklike rich compiled in last r1q2gl version value 2
u should also try to force gl_ext_pointparameters "0" if 2 not helping


@Sofiene since u "forget" to mention what model notebook u have and what OS u have installed im guessing this is kinda answer 2u

my laptop is a HP Pavilion g6 - 1302sk and im using Windows 7 64 bits, if you know where i can find the proper latest drivers for my Graphic card then ill be happy to get them, also, do i have to get the latest bios drivers as-well ? and do i have to delete CC from my pc and install it again ?

judging by this spec u have AMD Radeon HD 7450M (1 GB DDR3 dedicated) video card but ...

u should install 1st Chipset drivers then graphic drivers and after u find what rly video card u have u should update video card driver on http://www.amd.com/us/Pages/AMDHomePage.aspx
if ur not sure about video card model chose autodetect in driver section

MRT: Hmmm, I tried your fix right now. It sort of helped but my game still lags when using R1GL, now just with less dropped frames but it's still noticeable on dm1-8, but still bad on the other maps I mentioned in my other post.

Its not my "fix" its rich advice (while he developed r1q2gl) to  ATI video cards owners
Number of dropped frames also depend of:
- version of driver of your video card (every newest version work worse in quake2)
- your global video card settings (if is optimized for nicest)
- your video resolution if is to high for weak video card
- "nice" 32bit textures (some of them leaking all over map and kill fps)
- and also your particle/dynamic/and explosion models

i posted once (to lazy to search)  rich said once smth like this: i know q2pro graphic work better then r1q2gl but i developed r1q2gl for my taste and if u dont like it = play with q2pro
in your case play with gl (to red for me    voodoo had better color balance)

its not weird. sometimes OS cant recognize video card well without chipsetdrivers installed 

BTW new notebook Sof. I didn't read about new riot but i read in papers: some dutch, holand, even Serbian tourists was robed in Tunisia. I hope wasn't you.    (sry couldn't resist)

No wonder u had no issues with Gforce 8800GT. It was last best quake2 video card. All newer work worse in q2.

i just deleted the old AMD drivers and installed the new ones, didn't really install any chipset drivers cause they are already up to date.

and yes hahaha, maybe i robbed some Serbian tourists and got myself a new notebook, who knows lool
