Mystery in my Tray
« on: June 17, 2013, 07:06:42 AM »
I've been noticing some strange new icon that appears in my tray next to my clock. Its a rectangle made from powder blue lines with FFA within, and sometimes I see multiple instances of it. But when I try to hover over it with my mouse pointer, the tray automatically collapses and they disappear.I'd like to know if anyone has this happening to them and what it might be...

Are you perhaps running music or video with Windows Media or another media player? You might've downloaded the CCCP codec pack (combined community codec project) and I believe that's one of the video or audio codecs contained in it. I've seen it before on my system. Nothing to worry about.

I do watch videos, often stuff I download, but after coming home from work and leaving the computer unattended for hours,I saw 2 instances of the thing in my tray. I hover over one,and it forces the tray to contract for a couple of seconds with even the < pointing inwards > so you can't expand it again. This shut off the first, then trying for the second did it again. Sometimes I see 3 or 4 of the damn things...all from watching one instance of a videoplayer? If I knew how to take a screenshot of my desktop including the tray I'd isolate the image and show you the icon...

I have that on my machine at home, and it used to pop up regularly for me too.

If you're using xp you can right click the taskbar and hit the customize option to set how items in the taskbar are displayed, if at all. If you can find the entry for that icon, you can just tell it "always hide" and it won't display there when it's running.

Spybot finds nothing, and nothing appears in my Applications,Processes or Services tabs when I look for something in the Task manager that might use FFa as an icon. "FlashUtl32_11_7_700_224_ActiveX.exe*32" Adobe Flash Player installer/uninstaller 11.7r700  makes me wonder, since I have restarted a few times recently and nothing appears to be installing, and one other thing seems suspicious:"casc.exe" Sink to receive asynchronous callbacks for WMI client application. In any case, here is an approximation of what the icon in the tray looks like...

I'm a bit paranoid because lately when I visit certain sites I get this "Microsoft emergency alert" saying that the website is trying to deposit malware and Click Here to save yourself, especially from Matt Taibbi's blog at Rolling Stone, and when I try clicking the tab away,I am asked Are you SURE you want to navigate away from this Page? Considering its all webpage based warnings,I am sure its some sort of Malware lodged in my system already...But here is the link to Matt's blog to try yourself.

http://www.rollingstone.com/politics/blogs/taibblog

Even rarely at Blues News it happens..but I'll worry about the icon for now.

Mystery SOLVED.

I updated my DivX video player and now I can right click on the tray icons and see that they were indeed codex thingies. Not sure why 5 of the things would spontaneously appear when I am not watching vids...but itds enough for me...for now.

because you have the programs associated with managing those codex installed... which is usually a bad idea and they are usually totally junk

divx drives me nuts with its annoying background processes always checking for updates
