The long lost art of flaming in modern video games.
« on: March 31, 2013, 04:55:27 AM »
I had a thought that I wondered if was the case in other games too, these days I play League of Legends pretty much exclusively, and in LoL, there is censorship to the max. It's very difficult to express yourself with swearing (lol) and basically flaming is dead, it still happens but if you do it you tend to get reported by the other 9 players and suspended/banned. The problem with this is, if you are reported your 'case' is given to a tribunal, basically where players decide your fate because Riot gives them free currency for participating.

I think this is majorly gay, and takes away a lot of the rivalry and showboating that used to make me laugh so much when I was playing q2, granted some flaming and what have you was silly back then, but a lot of it (especially in higher level play) was hilarious and imo added another dimension to gaming. Perhaps some of the older gamers here (not that I'm a spring onion anymore myself, getting on!) will disagree but eh, if there's one thing I hate about League it's that, pussified generation of gamers who run for the report tool every time someone calls them something that hurts their e-feelings. Personally, the way i've gotten around the incessant asterisking is by simply calling them fat, given todays statistics for overweight/obesity, cross factor that most gamers are neckbeard shut-ins that usually qualify for being overweight/obese, you usually manage to offend and it's highly effective.

On second thoughts, maybe I'm just an asshole that was warped long ago by Quake that doesen't fit into todays gaming pool.

In other news, how is everyone? 3rd day of quitting smoking and I want to kill somebody, probably something that factors into why I'm talking so much shit on LoL right now haha.

censorship to the max

Freedom of expression must include the license to offend.

It always does make me laugh when I hear about servers that don't allow swearing because "it offends the players on the server".

But I agree, shit-talk does add kind of a new dimension to a game, rofl. Especially since about 85% of people who start shit aren't serious.

Me, BTF-DeathStalker, and BTF-Gator (when he ain't too chickenshit to race ;)) race in a Nascar Racing 2003 Season league, and the servers DS has set up have a cuss filter on the chat. Sometimes it filters completely legit non-cuss words too. Dunno if there's a way to turn it off, probably not. But you can imagine how much it annoys me not to be able to use some of my favorite words like fuck and shit and so forth. :dohdohdoh:

I don't play LoL but I heard in that game if you play to lose on purpose, or if you lose really bad (like 0-16) all the time, players can report you, in order to get your account banned. lol

sc2 got it right, just a checkbox in the settings for profanity filtering :) keeps it safe for the weak hearted little pussies and lets the rest of us flame each other all day long

though i would as most players of older games, prefer that there was no filter because its idiotic bullshit -.- since when have video games been politically correct?

Free speech in gaming never really existed. nowadays,it's owned by the companies servers. if it is hosted by them. Those that decide to amend any constitutional rights with legal jargon while using their product. in a nutshell essentially. they legally reserve the right to shut down your account you paid for. as well for any reason they see fit. (however that is quite rare) of course you agree to such a contract when you use their service. usually the community uses flagging or ratings to determine what is acceptable behavior. it isn't fair but that what it has come to today.

culture has become a increasingly more politically correct atmosphere these days.. The best you can do is avoid such games hosted on servers and go towards user generated websites and servers. of course there is no guarantee there either. it's solely up to the admins discretion. it hasn't been that different, only the method, culture, and exposure to many people that has changed. so it seems that some communities see more of it than others.

I fully support any and all shit-talking, seeing as how I'm one of the biggest assholes in all of q2 nowadays.  I make it my goal to piss off at least 3 people each time I play, through shit-talking or playing wise.  A really good time is when I can royally piss off an entire server full of people.  Always fun. :D

On that note, I'm glad I don't play LoL.  The game sounded gay when it came out, and the pussification I'm hearing about seals the deal for me.  At least QL doesn't care about that.  Most games don't, actually, just individual servers.

True to a degree, if you intentionally fuck the game up for the rest of your team you can and will be reported, which is fine imo I agree with that since you get penalties for leaving games and each game is anywhere from 20-1 hour long, it's frustrating when someone doesen't get the role they want and decides to troll pick and feed for the rest of the game. There's nothing you can do to combat that in the lobby, if you leave you get penalty, if you play you're probably going to lose.

But yeah, I'm probably on my way to a suspension soon, I think I made some people cry yesterday. hahah

One thing you may notice is that in general shooters have the loosest standards of multiplayer games when it comes to censorship of cursing and such.

Apparently somewhere along the way we decided as an e-society that if you're gonna spend hours shooting people in their faces, a few bad words here and there are probably not that much of an issue.

in the RTS world things are a bit different and same with the mmorpgs.
