i was playing doom as a toddler :D was fun!

also helped to have a pretty expensive computer to play quake and quake2 when they came out... always played software mode though, still can't stand the overly colored opengl lighting :( played software mode when i first started playing mp q2 here a couple years ago until some one convinced me to go with opengl and just use coloredlightmaps to kill all the colors :)

never did play on that shit dial up you kids all love to remember lol :) 8 down 2 up was my cable when i started playing cpma online and discovered IRC to play pickup ctf games.... til then, nothing but lan

i'm not old school... but i am not exactly new to the scene, loved quake and doom growing up, and still love them... doing like my fiftieth playthrough of doom2 right now with the bfg edition of doom3 on steam :P

I have vivid memories of my mother not allowing me to play Quake when I was 6. So I waited three years and started playing Q2.

What is the best way to open those old tga screenshots  :???:

I don't have many and can't remember how I opened them before, I have changed computers 3 or 4 times since I opened one.

I use infraview, but TGA is still a currently used format, so almost anything will be able to access them.

I'm not near as old school as ya'll on PC, but i'm still pretty old school. DOOM on SNES, yes SNES. then DOOM64, and Quake64.
As for back as I go with old school PC Q2 is an E-Machine in 2000. Celeron 800 w/56k modem trying to actually play it over AOL, which btw was not possible :( and Intel onboard graphics in software mode. :(

My first experience with id games was in 1994, playing Wolfenstein 3D on my family's 80386sx 16MHz. I had downloaded the shareware version from a local BBS over the external 14.4bps modem I bought at age 14. That machine had 2MB of RAM, a 40MB hard drive, and a 256KB Trident VGA card. It got about 20fps in Wolfenstein with the viewport set to ~50% of what was surely a 640x480 screen.

Nice

My first experience with id games was also with Wolfenstein 3D, in 1992, while we were developing this game:

<a href="http://youtube.googleapis.com/v/P-O0r28G2Cs&amp;start=163" target="_blank" class="new_win">http://youtube.googleapis.com/v/P-O0r28G2Cs&amp;start=163</a>

We started developement in late 1990 or early 1991,
and in 1992 when Wolfenstein 3D arrived, we were like..

 :disgust2: :err: :eek3:

What with the earlier release of 3D Ultima Underworld in 1991, and now the hyper-optimized 2.5D Wolfenstein, it was increasingly apparent that our fixed-view square-by-square dungeon renderer was becoming an anachronism.

Nevertheless we still thought we'd be finished with our game "this year", so we pressed on...

But by the time we did finish, fucking  DOOM  was out...

 :ugly_08:

So... We were pretty pwned by id Software at that point. :dohdohdoh:

By the time Quake was released, I had moved on to a different company, and I still recall eagerly awaiting the release of QTEST on id's FTP servers. I drove to the office at 1 AM or so to download and try out QTEST on my development PC as it was better than what I had at home.

We ended up LAN playing QTEST quite a bit at work prior to the official Quake release, and I still remember laughing at some of the goofy sounds in QTEST that didn't make it into official Quake. Particularly the player damage sounds. You'd be chasing someone with a nailgun, and their player would be making these hilarious "Waiiyeieieeeeeeeeeee!!" sounds as it was being hit.

Good times. :D

(BTW, A couple years ago, I extracted those very sounds from QTEST and now use them in Q2.)

Any chance I could get a copy of those sounds?

Attempting upload as attachment.

One pleasant surprise was that the QTEST sounds were a higher sample rate than the equivalent Quake1 sounds. (The latter presumably having been downsampled to save disk space.)

The particularly goofy sound I'd mentioned above is in the pak as player/*/pain25_2.wav

I've heard those before. I think someone used them in a sound pak for Q3 to replace the default Ranger model sounds.

those telefrag sounds are definitely from quake 1.

Again, many of the QTEST sounds went on to be used in Quake 1.

HOWEVER, most of the QTEST versions of these "same" sounds are higher quality!

Gave em a whirl. The player pain sounds are kinda cool, but I wasn't too crazy about the rest of them. Thanks for sharing.
