I wanted to say serial link but Q2 ditched that.  Before lan'ing on the good old token ring we'd get together and serial link together: quake & warcraft mostly.

I did that with DOOM and Duke Nukem 3D for a few months when I first 'discovered' gaming. Then Quake II came out...

My first experience with id games was in 1994, playing Wolfenstein 3D on my family's 80386sx 16MHz. I had downloaded the shareware version from a local BBS over the external 14.4bps modem I bought at age 14. That machine had 2MB of RAM, a 40MB hard drive, and a 256KB Trident VGA card. It got about 20fps in Wolfenstein with the viewport set to ~50% of what was surely a 640x480 screen. I tried running DOOM on that PC in 1995, but it was literally a slide show, so my very first PC build in my life became a Cyrix 5x86 133MHz with 8MB of RAM and a 240MB drive. It was comparable to a 80486dx 75MHz, which ate DOOM for breakfast and got me through almost 2 years of serial-cable-LAN games with friends. Unfortunately, it fell on its face running Qtest in 1996. My family purchased a Pentium 166MHz at the end of that year, tho, which ran Quake wonderfully and even got me through the first couple months of Quake2. In 1998, I splurged on a PII-300MHz and a 4MB Rendition GPU before heading off to college. That machine saw more Quake2 my freshman year than probably any other computer in existence

I'm so old school I ported Quake II to PDP8e assembler and used the toggle switches on the panel to play the game while watching an oscilloscope display.

Seriously though... I did once manage to run DOOM on a 386SX w/2MB but I was sad. I was happier than that when I had Q2 at 320x240 in software mode running on a Cyrix 6x86 PR200 (actually running @ 150MHz...) w/16MB RAM and a 1MB video card...

When I started I was on 14.4 modem.  I remember when I got the Voodoo card and got cable internet, I thought I going to own Q2

Being Old School is kinda neat, but really means nothing, definitely not worth arguing and making a post about.

yep, I may have sounded a little drunk/condescending in my previous post, but it's just really prevalent in the tdm scene. To me, I feel like people are trying to do some mutual ego stroke with me...(by name dropping haunted and saying that he's old school, maybe I could be more prone to receive similar attention...)..it's just imo, and i let these many comments always slide in-game because I don't give a shit really. historically, it seems to me that people lie about when they started playing in tdm to overcompensate for a lack of numbers on the scoreboard.

in actuality, this is more so an indicator that you're not "old school"(especially name dropping me, lol).. there was a time when most players of decent skill were the new guys on the block in tdm.. dahang and naymlis were both 2003 and got good super quick. I didn't even know what tdm/gx was until 02 or so and was on dial-up until 2006(28.8k)... not to mention a horrid cpu with horrid settings. adren didn't have a playable cpu until 05.

additionally, when I think of "new school q2" I think of it as a style/era, largely involving metagame.. and when meta progression comes to mind, and restricting it to usa players, i think of people like naymlis and flarez.. although flarez has been around for quite awhile. there's dudes like ah!/pyr3x who have also been good at this game ever since 2002ish, slowly adapting to the meta changes and stuff(ah! hasn't always been as fast and good at jumping as he is now). one can probably guess through style that flarez had some influence on people like me and slugs.

tl;dr

rigg5, nybar, krez, redeye, luci and just a few others were the only dudes I played with that actually played and knew about the old school competitive q2 scene(<2000)... although that group of italians(the_king, pyr3x, ah!, etc.) have been around well before me.

I was just using this otherwise pointless thread as an opportunity to reminisce. I'm sure others here have been gaming as long as, or longer than, me. I just have really fond memories of being a teenager and eating, breathing and sleeping DOOM, Quake, and Quake2.

haha we had similar first gaming experiences... mine was barefooting my windows 3.1 386 so it could handle doom/wolf3d/doom2... that was probably in 95.

and yeah, most do consider it reminiscing... but in the tdm world it's your resume/street credentials, homie.

I can honestly say I've never played TDM except vs Eraser bots. I've always been a FFA/co-op/SP player with just a little tiny bit of Q2CTF thrown in there.

I played lithium hook & rune on the ohio university bloodbath server for a year before I ever played a regular 1v1 or tdm on enter.net servers

prob not as old school as some but i did beat q1 and it's mission packs w/ romeros joystick....

I was 14 when Wolf3D came out. *nods* Hard to believe it's been 20 years.
