As for AK vs brick, I've shot many a brick with an ak, and it usually = dust afterwards.
Tried shooting a brick with 12 gauge birdshot up close, brick knocked over - little red welts on my arm and torso for me

I voted AK in this just because of cleaning, and bigger hits on stuff we shoot at. Easier and more fun.
In the event of needing an assault riffle, still go with an AK just because I'm familiar with them.
Who knows, might change.

A point brought up earlier was recoil.. That's going to differ from AK to AK,
a yugo AK with a slant brake will kick a whole lot more than (my favorite) a heavier VEPRK with a modern brake.
Nicer AK's really handle recoil well, and are capable of pretty good accuracy.

AK's can have rails too, even quad rails.

I won't dare say that AK's are completely useless, but at least this thing (pictured above) is 100% legal to hunt big game with. I believe the only restrictions on them is that they must be 100% semi-auto and you must use a legal magazine, no high capacity military 30 rd mags. I'm not absolutely sure, but I don't think that AK's are legal for hunting, even the semi-autos. If I were gonna hunt pigs or coyotes or some other type of smaller big game animal, I definitely rather go with a smaller caliber automatic rifle like an AR format or a Browning BAR rather than a bolt-action or a pump rifle.

If I ever get another hunting rifle to add to my arsenal, it's probably gonna be one of these rather than some AR.

Browning BAR LongTrac Stalker 270 winchester. Weighs in at just under 7 lbs. 270 win has enough power to take down most anything you'd hunt on the North American continent, and most people brand new to shooting can handle the kick very easily with a little bit of range time to get familiar with it. It's a 4 rd box magazine, but if you need more than 4 consecutive shots to get the job done, YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG anyway. They aren't cheap though. Browning makes nothing but top quality rifles, and brand new these usually retail for around 1k or better depending on where you shop. This is actually one of the cheaper BAR models.

Hunting with an AK? Saiga

I almost got one awhile back. Was just the basic hunting stock, no bells or whistles, but they swap out easy. $700 at a show.

Found a pic, hunter in Michigan. Looks like he hit a pretty good lung/heart shot even with iron sights.

This lady finds a fucking Sturmgewehr 44 in her closet and takes it to be destroyed! From the looks of it, it's in pretty rough shape. Apparently her father brought it back after a tour of duty in World War II. I can't believe she was clueless as to the significance of a gun like that. For starters, it's quite a rare rifle and worth lots of money even in it's state of disrepair. Not only that, but it signifies that obviously her father played a lead role in a few battles. As far as I know, not very many of these rifles ever saw action on frontlines outside of Germany. They were newer and more expensive and were mainly used towards the end of the war by the elite Waffen SS troops defending Germany against the invading Allied forces. So more than likely, her father was part of a regiment that actually made it into Germany towards the end of the war in the European theater. He probably picked it up off a dead SS trooper as the US forces pushed through Eastern Germany towards Berlin. That shit's a trophy of the highest order, probably only one notch of importance below an SS officers Luger,... and she was just gonna GIVE IT AWAY TO BE DESTROYED!
