New competitor against the high-priced Apple tablet.  Good price for the 8 GB, only $200, 16 gig only $250!  I might even get one of these with prices like that.  That's what's kept me from buying an iPad actually.

I'll wait for some reviews, of course, before I buy.

I seem to get along just fine without one. They make this junk and advertise the shit out of it, trying their hardest to convince people that they NEED it. If this shit can do what a computer can do... just get a computer. Most people do not need these things, but they see everyone else with them and they think they need one too. Same shit with these phones. Maybe you need a mobile phone, but you don't need text messaging and 500 apps and touch screens which make your phone cost 500 fucking dollars. I got a prepaid phone, I pay 1 dollar a day for the walkie-talkie function which is mostly what I ever use, and I don't have to sign up and pay 100 bucks a month for phone service that I really don't need to use anyway. Most people only talk so much on their cell phones just BECAUSE they have these contract plans with minutes on them. They think if they don't use the time, they're just wasting their money. Yeah, they ARE wasting their money, because they don't even NEED to talk on the phone most of the time. 9 times out of 10, they're just bullshitting with people about nothing important out of boredom. And all these people talking on cell phones and texting while driving... what it comes down to is that they are causing accidents on the roads just because they think driving a vehicle is a boring task in their day. People are getting their property damaged, their bodies injured, and their lives taken from them just because some asshole is bored and fucking with his phone or iPad or iPod or whatever the fuck else.

The only good thing about having an iPad/Nexus, or even an iPhone, is the ability to access full webpages while you're out and about.  I remember being stuck in traffic the other day for 2 hours and thinking "Man, having an iPad would be nice right about now to figure out an alternate route."  Truth be told, it's really made for people who are continually out and about or on the go.  Drivers would make the most use out of this technology I'd imagine.

I remember being stuck in traffic the other day for 2 hours and thinking "Man, having an iPad would be nice right about now to figure out an alternate route." 

I have a couple other options that are always available in my car and require nothing special:
*the radio to tune in the highway updates station to let me know where  I should get off.
*a map of the USA & Canada.  I'm I'm stuck in traffic I have plenty of time to look at it. 

The last thing I want to do when I'm out is what I do when I'm sitting at home in my office chair!

To be fair, I always pull over at the nearest exit to check where I'm at, and if there's an alternate route.  I never text or look up internet shit while driving, seen too many/nearly been in too many car wrecks because of shit like that.

I'm not trying to say that some of these gadgets don't have their uses. I just don't see such items as necessities for ME PERSONALLY, and they would only be luxury items. Sometimes I think it might be kinda cool to have a little laptop that I could take with me on a camping trip so I could watch a movie after dark, or listen to my music library, or even play a game. If it had internet access, it might be handy to also be able to look up certain things, like first aid related stuff, plant and wildlife identification, hunting and fishing regulations, things like that. But honestly, I've been on tons of camping trips before WITHOUT all that shit, so why should I spend 900 bucks on something I really don't need anyway. We've all got our toys and hobbies that we spend our money on, just something to bring us a little bit of enjoyment in that finite time between birth and death. I just don't see these electronic gadgets as a wise way to spend my money. The way they make these fucking things now, they won't last 10 years. And even if they DO, they'll be obsolete and damn near useless by then.

What it amounts to to me is this: Who are these gadgets really benefiting? Do I need a little tablet device that can store 50 downloaded books on it at once? Am I gonna read 50 fucking books at once? Well it saves space, and it's so convenient! Yeah, sure, it's a convenient way for the people who made it to sell it to you and make some money. Whereas before you would've bought a book, now you gotta buy a 300 dollar tablet thingy AND the damn book, AND you gotta buy the battery and pay to charge it. And that's fucking convenience, right? Hell yeah, that's so much more convenient that buying an actual book with paper pages that don't need batteries or power and will still be just as readable and usable in 100 years as it is today.

I just got a Samsung Galaxy Tab 7 and it is pretty sweet.

Waaay better than a first gen pocket pc I had years ago which at the time seemed cool as well.

got an ipad2 just to see whats the fuzz is all about. somehow the excitement and satisfaction of having such "whats - in" gadget is shortlived. Presently, I rather have a new laptop since its more functional. Dont know why, but I kinda not attracted to iPhones. but if i have a state of the art smartphone I would rather prefer the latest windows mobile smartphone or a samsung galaxy s3 --

You won't be hip when you're 75 years old either and still having to work your ass off for a living because you bought dumb shit in your younger years and never worried about saving for retirement because you thought social security and whatever other little piddly retirement plan would cover it. I'm not addressing anyone in particular with that, just stating my opinion on it. I think people are too damned careless with their money these days. The 25 years of hyper-prosperity in America before the recession still has people thinking they can mindlessly consume like they always have. A lot of these people have never been dirt poor and don't really know the value of their money as they blindly toss it at the latest trends.

Well, since we're going down this road, the idea of saving money is quite an abstruse one indeed.  To get your family's genetics to the point where they never have to work, i.e. for "the man", ever again, takes at least 5 full generations and a shitload of know-how and personal responsibility.  It also takes forfeiting your own personal enjoyment for not only your lifetime, but the aforementioned 5 lifetimes, into a monetary pool of your bloodline's wealth, in which you have to accept that the potential of failing the positive outcome well outweighs the negative by a ratio of easily 100,000:1.

It's a hard cruel reality, but only 1 out of literally a million will make it to even a level where you don't have to worry about your bloodline's future for the next 500 years, and even then, that's questionable.  You're talking about some serious odds stacked against you since we're exploring this almost never-traveled path.

Basically, what I'm saying is, whether you save for retirement and don't ever buy anything "fun", or blow money and have fun while you're young, the end result will be the same:  you will be fucked.  With the odds AT BEST being 100,000:1 of attaining the elite level of not having to worry about money ever again, for yourself or your future bloodline, there truly is little point in going "chicken little" over this issue.  98% of U.S. citizens will never have to really worry about reaching the golden area of existence.  And even for the remaining 2%, they have to worry between themselves whether or not each other will try and ruin the future for themselves.

It's a cold, dark reality in which no one truly wins.  But this in itself is the truth of being human.

On a related note:  In the future, humanity will no longer exist, and none of this will have mattered, as it will have been enveloped into the passage of time.  Strange to think about these kind of thoughts, in a way, but absolutely necessary.
