Author Topic: Need some help on my server figuring out a problem (Read 5821 times)

My server doesn't like to use the autodownload via r1q2. Standard quake2.exe works fine. If I autodownload via r1q2 it stops downloading at a certain point, then just sits there. The server log repeats something simular to this (date/time/up varies on the user):

[2012-07-04 22:14] NET_SendPacket to 74.32.97.234:60741: ERROR: Operation not permitted

Anyone have any ideas? server ip is 108.178.55.70

Narrowed down the problem with testing various clients. It's Protocol 35, the new one for r1q2. Stock Q4 is protocol 34, that works without any issues.

Shooting projectiles through a teleporter would be cool in Q2, doesn't solve my problem though. :p

When I set this new machine up at xmas time, I'm pretty sure Q2 was one of the very first things I installed. I also seem to remember using an r1q2 installer I had on a backup disc to install r1q2, and right after it installed, I ran the updater that came with it. On my old machine, I was able to play single player Q2 with no problems at all. On this one, I can play multiplayer all day everyday, but when I go to start a single player game with r1q2, now it says, "ERROR: Your Quake II installation is missing the single player data, you cannot start a single player game." Which is odd, because I installed the game itself from an actual original game disc, and the single player will load when using the stock quake2.exe. So I gotta assume whatever is fucked up with the last updated version of r1q2 is causing whatever problem you're having too.

There may not be anything you can do about it unless you dig into the client code and maybe stuff people commands on connect to override whatever is fucked up.

create an empty base1.override file into your Quake2\baseq2 folder.

Is there any program that would let me monitor what ports protocol 35 is using when it sends data from the sever?

Fiddler would do it, but you won't be able to run it on the server.

Mentioning that it makes me think that the http ports are being messed with on that remote server. As if it's accepting inbound but not outbound.

port 80 was unblocked to test but it didn't help. According to r1ch's forums it uses UDP unless HTTP is setup. I don't have HTTP setup so I'm assuming it's using UDP.

If you want to just watch all packets between your system and the server, an example would be:

windump -D {outputs a list of your available network interfaces prefixed with a number... choose one and use that number below in the -i flag} windump -i3 -s0 -X host 108.178.55.70

That will capture all packets to/from the specified host, and dump them out as hex. (There are approx. eleventeen billion more options supported if you need to be more specific about what is being captured from where, in the docs.)

wireshark is a little bit easier to use for most people and you don't have to worry bout the vulnerabilities in most home situations.

Strange, when I connect to me Q2 server it lists the protocal as "quake2". When I connect to a tast server it says UDP.

The udp game data is going to go through 27910-279## by default.

Quake 2 and quake 3 had similar default ports. q3 is something like 27970. Anyway I've had plenty of routers with port forwarding presets that listed the protocol as "quake2/3"

The actual map downloading stuff I'm not sure about unless the http downloading is turned on. Also try 8080 as well.
