What other FPS game do you play?

Im getting a new puter soon that can handle the new stuff. I checked out this gametracker.com to find which mp fps were the most popular. From what i can tell, it is counter strike source and call of duty 4. It's crazy how many people are on like a dozen us servers with 50 ppl or more!

Anyways, could you guys tell me which games would be most like q2 TDM? Ofc, games that have alot of action?

both are free for download, neither have a lot of players.

you should download IRC and actually idle with the q2 community that aren't morons... you'll be linked to streams to multiple competitive games including the occasional stream on q2 with commentating... finding duel practice is easier or good teams. there's also a live feed that shows everything that's going on... I've tried to get you to idle in IRC before but I don't think you were interested, which is ironic because it would make your boring q2 life much less monotonous. you'll also find better conversation then the babble kyuss was spitting to you on the jump server earlier.

That's just as far as I know, mind you. Maybe there are others out there. I have not seen them if they exist. Quake2 is the only game with those particular movement physics that I've ever played. If strafe jumping for speed and added distance was merely an accident when they made the game, it was definitely a GOOD accident. I've played quake3 and quake4 online a little bit. I suppose quake3 comes the closest, but it lacks the same movement physics. Quake4 is even worse. I'm not really sure what was going on, but for some reason whenever I tried to play it online, it ran pretty slow. If I scaled the graphics options all the way back, it helped a little, but not as much as I hoped. And still, it's basically a prettier version of Quake3 I guess. Some people like the lack of quake2's movement physics in quake3 though. Personally I'd rather play quake2 and be able to get to where I wanna go faster.

But in my opinion, there are no other games that play quite as well as quake2. These days, it seems like multiplayer FPS games are trying to achieve a level of realistic firearm-driven combat and it's removed much of what I could only refer to as the "arcade" element from the gameplay. If I had to put a finger on precisely what is missing from these games, it would be speed. That speed equals excitement and fun. The "realistic" movement they try to add to games only serves to slow down the pace at which you move around. The way they utilize too many "powerups" or not enough of them also falls short of what Quake2 does. These games can be interesting and fun in their own right, but they do not really compare to a game like Quake2.

connect to enterthegame.com .. I think with Mirc you click the enterthegame server, then double click "Random server" underneath.

when you connect to the server, you'll be presented with a new window / a prompt where you can type commands.

Nothing like Q2, it's one-of-a-kind. Even the free games based of the engine aren't like Q2.

I play Team Fortress 2 a ton.   Quite good for a pub player actually, I've competed in the pro's vs pub's tourney quite a few times.  Team Fortress 2 is also a free to play game, check it out.

Thing is... let's be logical here. You're asking this question on a messageboard devoted to Quake2. Obviously the pool of answers you get is gonna be greatly skewed towards Quake2 loyalty. Also, I suspect that the die-hard old school Q2 fans that are still left around here aren't quite as adventurous in their choice of FPS games as other people. Perhaps it would be a good idea ask around on a few other FPS gaming boards too.

And just to make a point: Sometimes when I'm talking to people about guitars and amps and such, they'll say things like, "Man, I went to this store the other day and test drove a <(insert amp name here)>. Man! It sounded just like a Marshall! I've always wanted an amp that sounded as good as a Marshall!" Then GET A FUCKING MARSHALL! All these other amp companies that try to make the best amp out there always do things differently than Marshall, and they all love to claim that they replicate that Marshall sound, but almost none of them do. Marshall is a timeless original. There might be others that do things differently and sound different, and maybe someones tastes might like something else better than a Marshall, but there is still only ONE Marshall.

Same with Quake2. Why screw around and try to find something "like" it. Quake2 is right here already.

For other games I like Quake 1, Doom 1/2/Final, Serious Sam 1/3, DNF... But nothing is like Q2.  DNF might come the closest.  It's got a more varied map design & MP weapon assortment along the lines of Q2, not super-balances like modern games.

Aside from q2-loyalty or any other pre-conceived biases, there really isn't any NEW game that will ever be like q2.  Q2 was and still is the only game of its kind that has the perfect balance of movement characteristics with ability to add new mods and options like no other game.

From what I've heard Unreal Tournament 99 was the closest to q2-feel that you could get in another game category.  Everything nowadays is an aggregation of the Quake 3 engine (stupid, I know), which means the "feel" will never be anything like q2.

Anyway, I know why you're really posting.  It's about the lack of players in q2.  You're looking for more players in a game that's just like this one.  Sorry to say, it's not gonna happen.  Best solution is to time your connects well so you hit right when everyone else is on.  That's the only solution I've found.

don't get me wrong, I am a q2 player.. but, just re-quoting this if anyone is ever curious to actually play a game that is like q2.

www.quake2world.net , hit me up in IRC and i'll play you in whatever mod you want (arena, duel, insta).. there's a built in server browser, and an edge remake by panjoo.

quake2world(after some tweaking as of recent) feels more like quake 2 than any other quake... although it's still in beta.

could always play unreal tourney, 2k4 and 3 are both fairly popular still.... bit slower but nice and action packed with some cool stuff that goes into them

most people around here though don't play q2 because they have old computers though new computers can play q2 just as good as old ones can

can always hop into ctf pickups for the other quakes, cpm q4 and ql specifically.... think tdm pickups are a little dead except for qw and q2, could be wrong though was never into q3 tdm

I never found the UT games to be anything like the Quake games.  Movement and weapon handling were completely different.  I liked Assault mode though.  Best think Epic contributed to gaming along with Instagib.
