Problem forcing odd resolution
« on: April 21, 2012, 05:59:42 PM »
so.... i dont like the 4x3 aspect ratio, i dont like the 16x9 very much though it is kinda playable i guess... but i did notice running the 4x3 aspect ratio it did just put black bars ont he side, so i figure... hm... do the math, figure out 1229x768 is 16x10 that im used to, and tried forcing it in r1q2 using r1gl... however, when i did the vid_restart it would NOT stay fullscreen, vid_fullscreen 1;vid_restart didnt do anything, it just wont go fullscreen :(

any way to do that? just tryin to get 16x10 with black bars on the side on a 16x9 monitor...

The resolution needs to be created / supported by your video drivers before an application would be able to use it. If you're using an NVIDIA card then you should be able to create a custom resolution using its control center. If not, then you'd have to use a third party program like PowerStrip.

I'm not sure why you'd want to go out of your way to create black bars though, the image quality would be better if you just used your monitor's native 16:9 resolution.

image quality isnt what concerns me, its accuracy of flick shots, which gets a little screwed up goin from 16x10 on my desktop to 16x9 on my laptop

I didn't like 16x9 either

The resolution I put in my cfg,  1440x900.

Anyhow,  the first time I run the cfg it sets to that,  but in windowed mode.
I run it AGAIN and it goes fullscreen.

Try having it in a separate cfg and run it twice?

knowing me and the way i script, im gonna do this when im half asleep and think its the best idea ever to call the config at the end of itself... yay for infinite loops generated from tired scripting xD

unless.... does the quake scripting have conditional statements?

What the fuck man. :lolsign: You're the only person I know who'd stress over this. Sounds to me like you wanna make it harder than it has to be. Maybe it's just in your mind. I don't see how screen resolution could possibly affect how your mouse moves anyway. Sounds to me like you need to just pick whatever resolution looks best to you, then experiment and tweak your FOV setting. FOV will affect the speed at which your crosshair moves around the game, but I don't see how screen resolution possibly could unless you're using something like 640x480 or smaller. And even then, it's not the tiny resolution affecting your mouse, its more the tiny opponents are harder to locate as quickly, especially if your eyeballs are as shitty as mine.

just that lttle thing where my mind will judge a distance on screen and i flick my wrist to cover that distance, but the perspective of that distance will be difference with the same height between top and bottom but different distances between left and right... if i did a 16x10 resolution, i basically just get black bars on the side (or at least thats the theory) and it gives me the perfect aspect ratio im used to playing with so it doesnt screw up my flick shots :) i can still play no issue with 16:9, flick shots are the difference

I.... have no idea what you just said. But I guess you're talking about using a widescreen monitor since the topic is aspect ratio. Yeah, never really thought about it before but I suppose the squished screen would possibly change aiming performance up and down since monitor aspect ratio basically IS another form of fov. Anyway, if you got widescreen, might as well take advantage of it and use the entire screen rather than forcing black bars on the sides. Seeing more is seeing more. Unless it does some weird shit like my widescreen tube TV that isn't running off of a HD box and it stretches the edges of the picture... which basically you're gonna be doing over the entire screen anyway by using a higher than 90 fov which I'd have to assume you do.

its not a questoin of 16x9 vs 4x3 its actually 16x9 vs 16x10, its not different enough that youd really be able in your mind to see it... but it is different enough a flick shot might miss... im used to 16x10 from my desktop, just weirds me out playing on laptop which is 16x9 lol

the black bars i intend on the side would be very small, just to scrunch a 16x9 into a 16x10 display

HAHA! I remember back when I was still in EoM, ole Aces&Eights was having trouble and couldn't get a crosshair to display no matter what he tried. I told him to just hop on a server and fire a railgun at something far away then take a sharpie and put an X on the monitor where it hit.

people do that with console games that dont allow a crosshair lol

not suggested if you have an lcd monitor :P but crt is all good!
