Been fiddling around with GIMP, and made a few custom conchars. Figured I post them here.

Hmm... I remember someone made an incomplete gothic font for Q2.

That is MUCH easier said than done. The size of the console character map is pretty small, 128x128 pixels which squeezes 256 individual characters onto it. Each character only gets an area 8 pixels by 8 pixels. Not much you can do to make interesting shapes with an 8x8 square.

Although... I'm not sure, but it might be possible to double or quadruple the size of the PNG version of the conchars. In a few other games, I know that you can double or quadruple the size of the skin textures in order to achieve higher resolution.

Yes, you can do that. I know making a different font for Quake 2 is completely possible, though. I'm just way too lazy.

I didn't really figure that trick out until I started painting skins for cars in Nascar Racing 2003. Usually I end up doubling the size of the templates to 2048x2048 to get more detail on logo graphics. Not sure how it would look in quake2 though. 4x-ing the size of the conchar map might show up differently depending on what resolution you use.

The Bullz pak uses a conchars.png that is twice the size of a normal conchars.png

Will whatever fixes you're doing to r1gl be able to work with plain old unmodified r1q2, or would someone have to use it with a modified version of the client? Maybe before long I'll try making another pak file. Would be nice to be able to double or quadruple the size of the conchars to use a more detailed font and still have them display well. Only so much you can do to make letters and numbers in a 6x6 pixel (or whatever it is) square. My eyes go all stupid blurry after 10 or 15 minutes of play and I can barely read anything on the screen until I shut the game off and let my eyes readjust for 10 minutes. Don't like to use HUD scaling because it makes everything look like crap. Would love to be able to make things larger without that ugly pixel-stretching crap going on.
