very awesome "fuck you other knife companies" attitude lol gonna have to pick myself up a few fu42's to replace my older knives... some controversy surrounding them in the knife communities obviously, but i will definitely be supporting this company

side note, if you are interested in their knives, they are only 120$, but the blade options right now are a little limited due to low production numbers for their first run

I've yet to own or see a butterfly knife made by ANYONE that worth a shit for anything other than display. Used to have an expensive Benchmade one with a serrated lower edge that I'd use for slicing apart refrigerant line insulation. After about 2 days of use, the knob on the bottom of the blade that holds the two handles apart to provide tension for the latch wore the sides of the handles down and it wouldn't latch anymore. Most butterfly knives are notorious for that. It's ridiculous. It's a very simple design flaw that could be easily fixed by bonding some type of hard rubber to the edge of the handle. I refuse to buy another one for this reason.

My personal favorites are Gerber knives. They stay sharp enough to shave with damn near forever. Still have my old big fat Gerber Gator Serrator. Looks like something you'd skin a bear with... while it was still alive. Fucker's LARGE. Nice wide blade from edge to back, yet it's not all that thick and can withstand insane amounts of pressure and won't snap. It's been put through lots and lots and lots of hell while camping as well on the job. Never sharpened it once, and it's still got a pretty edge on it.

Dunno if you know this either, but it's illegal to carry a blade of butterfly knife length in your pocket on the street unless you have a concealed carry permit.

When you described how big your gerber was, it made me think of mine, but I googled "Gerber Gator Serrator" and... I think mine is bigger likely. It's still packed away, not sure what kind it is specifically.. I've been using by gerber multi tool when I need a knife, as of lately.

i dont do heavy cutting on anything, and i prefer a butterfly knife to a normal folding one... not to mention they are really fun to flip kinda one of those busy things to do if you are just sittin around for a few minutes

im also aware of the conceal laws for them... kinda bullshit conceal permit is on my to-do list for this very reason, but i cant carry in school or anything anyways so knifes stay by my computer most the time

its just kinda nice considering the quality of the knives from this new company is comparable to benchmade, at about half the cost

not really tryin to advertise the knives cause i know butterflies aint for everyone, but if ya get on their site and read some of their info, they just rip on other knife companies my favorite quote has got to be "However there is a warning to other pussy knife companies that decide to steal the idea.  The knife companies that steal the Piston Cam Latch are openly admitting that Exiled Cutlery is more intelligent than any of the idiots working for them and furthermore proves that you steal the work of other companies and Exiled Cutlery will expose you as the thieving bastards that you truly are."

reading their site gave me a good chuckle cause ive read some controversy about benchmade doing lawsuits about simple things

I think the website is pretty cool and very funny, but I can't shake off a whiny little baby attitude from the writer of the pages. Like he's playing a childish victim trying to get even. On the other hand, I've seen that kind of competition be an excellent motivator for quality in a company that I used to work for.


As for the product, I don't see the value in a butterfly knife, short of trying to look like a dancer in a Leonard Bernstein musical. When they start a line of hunting knifes or decorative stuff (swords/axes) I'll be back.

well far as folding knives go, if you get a GOOD butterfly knife, not a cheap one, they have the most reliable locking mechanism out of any folding knife because you hold both handles while using it and there is just no way its gonna fail unless the pins break...

but showing off is kinda meh, dont need to show off just because ya flip a butterfly knife its quite an entertaining pass time if you dont cut yourself up much

simple and light. solid design and no wiggle in the blade when it's locked open.

only drawback is the hardness of the steel. makes it a bit of a pain to put an edge on it when you eventually wear it off.
I keep a couple of other knives in my car and backpack that are cheaper 440 stainless blades for jobs where I want something razor sharp. (fishing etc)

for killing people I'd use my 2 foot short sword with armor piercing tip or my fairly simplistic bowie knife.
I'd lean toward the bowie as it's damn near unbreakable.

A gerber is hard to get an edge on it? it's hollow ground, put a steel on it on the regular and you won't have a problem, if it wears down use a coarse diamond stone then use the steel.

It doesn't really matter what people think or say about them, it's the cops and sheriffs deputies that are of the opinion that "butterly knives are just for killing people." A lot of them, if they see one sitting in your car while doing a traffic stop for slight speeding or having a taillight out or something minor like that, they'll act like you've got a machinegun and 20 severed human heads. Sometimes they'll draw their sidearm, point it at you, back away, and scream at you to get out before putting cuffs on you. It's a dangerous job, and I understand them being super cautious about weapons, but some of them take it a bit too far. Not bad mouthing ALL cops, I personally know a couple that are quite intelligent and very reasonable individuals, but I've met even more that I'd say are too stupid to be carrying around a gun and a badge with the authority to arrest people.

The main thing I liked about using a butterfly knife on the job was because of it's easy one-handed operation. 90% of the time when I'd have need of a knife for something, I'd be up on the top of a ladder. A lot of times, the ladder wasn't entirely tall enough for the job. I'd have to stand either on the very top of the ladder or I'd be straddling the very top of the ladder with feet on both sides of it trying to reach something against the ceiling. I'd have one hand on a pipe or steel I-beam to keep myself from falling, and the other hand I'd reach into my ass pocket and grab the knife so I could cut insulation or insulation tape. A normal lockblade isn't worth a damn for that situation because sometimes it takes two hands to open it. I used to use one of those flip-open lockblade razor utility knives where you can open the blade holder and flip the razor blade over when one side gets dull. But for one, those aren't easy to close with one hand with slicing a finger open. But for two, and the biggest reason I stopped using one, is because those razor blades dull to complete SHIT after about an hour of usage. BOTH sides! It wouldn't make a clean cut through that rubberized insulation anymore, it would fucking tear the shit as you'd cut it and make it look like a fucking amateur was doing the insulation job. Not to mention I got tired of having buy a new pack of razor blades every 3 days.

I did used to get some pretty strange looks from people on the job when they'd see me flipping open a butterfly knife on a job site, but hey, when something works, it doesn't matter how psycho it looks when you're doing it. All that matters is what the department supervisor sees when he stops by to inspect your work. They always prefer to see a nice straight clean cut in the insulation with only one piece of tape covering it. It saves money in tape, and it looks more professional.
