what client?
i know in R1Q2
set cl_particles "0" turns rail trails off
you might have tried it. but thats all i could think of causing the issue.

, i have cl_particles set to 1, I've had gl_particle at both 0 and 1 but never see any.

you may have the size so low that they're non-existent, although present... but if you've tried it with r1q2 and it still ain't showing up then that wouldn't make sense.

I'm using q2starter but I have q2kicker... I can see particles and that's what the cmds are set at, not sure if that'll help.

It allows you to replace your .md2 models in AprQ2 with .md3 models. Since servers don't check for .md3's, it can be used for hiding spiked models; which is why IRTDM forces "gl_replacemd2 0".
It's set to 1 on my config by default. I'm going to change it.

maybe its something as messed up as the pallet for the particles missing XD the actual file...
think that would screw up a bunch more things though

It's a brand new laptop and they're fresh copies of r1q2 starter and q2kicker guys......
i would lean towards something being weird in his gfx settings almost, because particles work just fine in ANYONE else's fresh copy, plus we've eliminated the most probable causes of this...
he has an AMD w/ radeon board, maybe someone who is familiar with these could drop him a line.
