monitor hz question
« on: February 05, 2012, 02:50:58 PM »
My thread in smack turned into an actual discussion, so I'm posting this question here:

My monitor is set to 60 hz right now.  I heard setting the hz too high can damage or burn out a computer monitor.  I've got an older (big bulky heavy) one...

Details:  monitor is a MAG Innovision 986FS, and has a max capability of 85 hz @ 1024x768.

Is it safe to set it to 85 and not cause damage?  Will that let me get 85 fps?   :???: :???:

Monitor HZ has nothing to do with fps in terms of increasing or decreasing . What you are looking to do is sync your frames with your monitor. If you were to achieve 60 fps I would consider locking your Monitor hz to 60. Optimal settings vary I use 60 hz on 22 '' lcd  with 120 fps and cl_async 0 , with my old CRT Monitor I used refreshforce to achieve 120 hz allowing me to sync fps in game to 120 . I am under the assumption it pertains to visual affects screen tearing and overall appearance. You need to buy a new computer or get a 5$ video card . There is a sticky thread on this topic somewhere I think Elysium did the write up explaining these things.

I assume you are using windows....the default is to have the modes that are unsupported not listed so if it says 85hz you should be fine to set the refresh there.

Do you use r1q2?  If so then set your r_maxfps to at least 85 then you should be fine for 85 fps..   usually this is set to 1000 as default.

Wouldn't mess with the cl_maxfps if you have on board video...just make sure that you use cl_async 1 so that rendering and frames are separate.

Late note: Since this is onboard video it still might not work, worth it to try though.

if you are runnin win xp, your refresh rate will lock at 60hz regardless of hardware.

the 3rd party app refreshforce/reforce will allow you to circumvent that.

I was able to put it @ 85 hz...not sure if that helped or hurt, still laggy.  :/

Derv, I'm on Vista.  It let me put it @ 85 so I'm guessing it doesn't lock it?

if you use async 1, which for most normal play its better

monitor refresh rate has no effect on cl_maxfps

set your refresh rate to 60, do cl_async 1 r_maxfps 60 cl_maxfps 66

async 1 splits up frames rendered and updates sent to the server

r_maxfps will be rendered, depending on graphics card and monitor and stuff youll tweak this around

cl_maxfps will be your updates sent to the server per second, so you can render at 1000 and still only send 66 :) this is why you get issues with a cl_maxfps higher than 125 causing a flood and it drops you

stock q2, and cl_async 0 both send an update to the server every time a frame is rendered, so if you have vsync you render 60 frames with your refresh rate, you will also send 60 updates to the server

My LCD caps at 75 also booya,   That's what I have it set to in windows.

 cl_async 1
 gl_swapinterval 0
 cl_maxfps 120
 r_maxfps 1000

Those are my settings and the dm8 crates are cake,  and I just found out last year about the dm6 railgun jump, (jumping up to it with cylinder on your left) works great too.   Timerefresh reads 310 frames per second.

gl_dynamic 0 with gl_swapinterval 0 seems to get rid of the blurryness and im pretty sure Vae. and astral, and misery, that if my monitor hrtz are below 75, i cannot achieve 120 fps.... hence monitor hertz does play a role with fps? but i never messed with r_maxfps that low, um mine i set to 12000 seems to effect game speed..... :) I used to run laptops with built in software video stuff and had to use REFORCE to force higher monitor hertz to achieve 120 fps...  Ex. forcing a monitor hrtz to high for to long over clocks your pc and over heats it, at least for laptops.. i would assume the same for towers. I cannot find a program for vista to do it correctly.

it technically overclocks the monitor, and would fry the monitor :P your graphics cards are well beyond capable of rendering thousands of frames per second (assuming they have the processing power) :) monitors are designed to run at a fixed refresh rate
