Default OpenGL and Windows 7 64 bit
« on: January 20, 2012, 09:35:51 AM »
Hi all. I bought a new computer when Windows 7 came out. I am putting on old games on it. like Quake 2. My system is running Windows 7 64 bit processor.
I was able to install Quake 2 with no problem  as well as  The Reckoning and Ground Zero. The game runs smoothly and flawlessly in the default graphic setting. This allows me to play but the graphics are fair. The game  crashes when I change it. I am trying to get Default openGL to work. I have even set the program to load using compatibility mode of XP service pack 3. I know my graphics card could run it. Side note Quake 3 arena and Quake 4 are perfect no problems there.
I know its a driver problem or possibly  a 64 bit problem. I don't know that but its The only thing I can think it can be.
If any of you Computer Guru's know  what the problem is and can help me or direct me to someone who can, I would Greatly appreciate. I have broused this forum but may have missed the solution. I have googled the problem. I have seen others with the same problem. It is nice to see these forums are still active. I leave in your hands.    :help:   Thanks in Advance

I have installed R1q2 and that did the trick for the multiplayer games. Does it work with single player. I get a missing config nessage  from r1q2 and no r1gl option from single player.

You must have some weird shit going on with your folders then. It shouldn't make a difference what "mode" you're playing in. When you start up r1q2 it should be nothing but the console background showing until you hit ESC to bring up the menu. From there you can select single player or pick one of the multiplayer servers in your address book. So if it isn't loading the proper CFG file to tell the game to use a particular renderer DLL, then you must be starting off on a server thats running a mod other than straight vanilla deathmatch. Mods (railz, wodx, etc) will usually have their own CFG file in that mod folder. Thats why its best to create a file called "autoexec.cfg" in the baseq2 folder. That one will act as kind of a master CFG. I don't think that file can be permanently edited from inside the game though, so you'd have to figure out which config.cfg file it taking on all the changes you wanna do in-game and then copy the contents of that file to the autoexec to make them permanent.

Maybe that explanation is a little confusing. If so, just ask, we can help you further.

I will clarify the problem. I installed R1Q2. The program installed fine I believe. The multi player works fine. When trying to start a single player mode I get the following error

Error: Your Quake 2 Instillation is missing the single player data,  You cannot start a single player game.

I am able to start a single player game in the default graphic. from regular quake game
Now. If the missing file is in R1Q2, Should I uninstall it and reinstall it?  Install it again on top of the current install?
Is the missing data a Cfg file that I needed to make?
I hope the error message is of some help. Thanks for your replies Alpha and Focalar

I found the solution. It was on this page.
I did what it said. The empty  base1.override file was inserted ans single player now loads.    :yessign:

http://www.r1ch.net/forum/index.php?topic=2082.0

I quote :

Release b8012 is confirmed not to load SP mode in a system with the full commercial version of Q2 installed. The program insists that single player data is missing. This appears to be a malfunction in the StartGame function in the new version. It checks to see if base1 will load. There is a bug introduced in this version as a result of StartGame calling the CM_MapWillLoad function which looks for two files, base1.bsp and base1.override. This function gets called twice, first by StartGame looking in the Quake2 root folder for both of these files and the second time by SV_GameMap_f looking for them in the maps folder. BOTH tests must pass, indicating that one or the other file exists or the game will fail to start. Since base.bsp is properly stored in the maps folder of pak0.pak it never exists in the quake2 root. The result is that the first call, by GameStart doesn't find base1.bsp or base1.override in the root and announces the failure, preventing SP mode.

You can work around this bug by putting an empty base1.override file into your Quake2\baseq2 folder.

Once that file exists and you restart r1q2, the empty override file will be found in the root, passing the first test and base1.bsp will be found in the maps folder of pak0.pak on the second pass and you will be able to play single player.

IMO, this file check in GameStart was needlessly added and should be removed and a new version released.

Well one thing I spot in your config is this:
set vid_ref "soft"
That's telling it to run it in software rendering mode. I'm not 100% sure, but I believe that playing in software mode will make the game run a much lower FPS rate than with openGL or r1gl. This will probably make it harder for you to react as quickly when an opponent engages you. You'd probably want that set to:
set vid_ref "r1gl"
If I recall correctly, r1gl does NOT come bundled along with the r1q2 client download, it's another file you have to download from r1ch's page separately. And while you may not be able to tell a difference in the graphics at first glance, believe me, it does render things a little better than the stock openGL renderer. And while you're at it, might as well toss in the anticheat.dll too. It doesn't hurt your ping or connection at all and it lets everyone know you're as legit as possible. That's entirely up to you though, it isn't required. If you're running an antivirus program, it could possibly automatically remove the file as a suspected trojan even though it is NOT a virus, trojan, or malware.

The config file will always show the last video mode used. If he tries to set r1gl and it fails r1q2 will fall back to soft, setting it in the config when he shuts it down. Your recommendations are otherwise good ones.

Thank you all. I did download the full package. Anticheat was installed.
One more question please.
If I wanted to run reckoning or ground zero, Do I install the R1Q2 in each of the baseq2 folder to get gl graphics?  It would be a pity If I get good gl in the main game and the default graphics in the two modes. I appreciate the help. I was on the vanilla server two days ago. I am very rusty. Heehee. I look forward to gaming with you all again.

I don't think so. I have both expansion packs (although I've never played through them 100%) and I don't recall anything funky going on with the video. I think the content from both mission packs should install into the same baseq2, so you shouldn't need to do anything with folders. Although I do suspect that if you try to run either one of the mission packs from the shortcuts that it installs in the Windows start menu, those shortcuts might run the game through the quake2.exe rather than r1q2.  I dunno, I'd test it out and see but I don't have the expansion packs installed on this new machine yet.

Thanks again for all the replies. I am now gaming with the gl graphics that blow default settings away. I wanted to play the expansion packs with the gl graphics too. After an hour of fiddleing about I found these settings to work. The only diownside is that the settings are not saved, but that is no problem. I change it  in the middle of the game.
For the Reckoning I used:     "C:\Program Files (x86)\id Software\Quake II\r1q2.exe" +set game xatrix +set vid_ref r1g
For Ground Zero  I made a shortcut:  "C:\Program Files (x86)\id Software\Quake II\r1q2.exe" +set game rogue +set vid_ref r1gl
I am so rusty playing that I forgot how to change weapons (heehee).
The next task to solve. To load the R1Q2 using GameSpy, and Kali. And then to get the graphics to load in the Mods like WOD and Action Quake.
I plan to be on the tasteyspleen this weekend. Thanks again for all your help.  :ilysign: :ilysign:
