You guys act as if this stuff is a secret. The things to mention, it would be unfeasible to assume that there is a single "mcdonalds mega farm" that produces all of the eggs used in an egg mcmuffin. What they probably did was take a video of a chicken farm and slap mcdonald's label on it for political activism points.

They show this kind of stuff all the time on discovery, not as a shock campaign or overblown news story but as a documentary on how things are made in factories. I honestly was a little shocked watching the how it's made episodes on hatcheries and egg farms but I got over it.

The most disgusting episodes were eye prosthetics and blue cheese production... but you don't see any eyepatch toting protestors or european blue cheese demonstrators. Just because something is shocking to you doesn't make it wrong. It just makes you ignorant....

To get back to the chicken nuggets. All food that you eat, short of stuff bought at a farmers market or from the butcher, goes through a factory and is "processed." Part of processing virtually all foods involves things like acids to kill off bacteria, preservatives, and texture or shape enhancing additives. Would you eat yogurt if I told you that they grow the bacteria in a bacteria farm and have to inject it into the yogurt? Most of them even have preservatives or added acid yet they are still healthy. But to the original point, I can't imagine that any amount of any preservative used at a factory outweighs the health concern of eating a box full of deep fried food. But to each his own.

It's not really a fair comparison to list all the ingredients McDonalds puts in their food (which is listed on their website) and not list all the stuff in his mom's fried "chicken".  Unless it's slaughtered at home, the chicken as extra stuff added to it besides food/water, the milk has extra stuff in it unless it's raw milk, AND it's processed AND cooked and flour isn't a simple ground up wheat any more either.  McDonalds (and others) do breaded fried chicken, which isn't the recipe he uses.  Add in bread crumbs (or whatever), the spices, etc.  and you'll get a list just as long.

When my wife makes homemade cookies to sell the list of ingredients is as along as (maybe longer) then McDonalds nuggets.  Chocolate, flour and milk can make a longer list then that.

However, I'd love a defoaming agent.  Frying chicken foams like crazy, I had to switch to the cast-iron dutch oven to fry the chicken last week because I was afraid it was going to foam over & start a fire.

Not that it matters--the events in the video are what they are regardless--but it's the fifth largest egg supplier in the country, and produced all eggs used by McDonald's restaraunts west of the Mississippi
all eggs used by McDonald's restaraunts west of the Mississippi.  McDonalds dropped the supplier shortly after the video surfaced.  (Am I aware that food production is a messy business? Yes. Do I imagine that this particular event will lead to improved conditions at other factory farms? Probably not; they'll just tighten security.)

Yeah, old news..

There's a choice involved. in 2011 I ate fast food less than 10x, and that's counting subway which is the only chain around here. I also don't smoke cigarettes. There are a few habits of mine that I do that aren't good for my body... Nonetheless it's my own fault for doing so. something like 2nd hand smoke at restaurants presents more of a debate (I'm not sure about that one myself).
